I always use Optimax.  Got a shell garage at the end of my road.

Either tesco's 99ron fuel or shell's v-power are both recommended by fellow forumites.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

Like most have said, it depends on how you drive it, for example my trip to Inters today.

trip down this morning was a steadyish one and i managed around 39-40mpg, my trip back was a bit more enthusiastic shall i say and i returned a mpg of 33-34mpg

Well I wont be recommending Tesco 99 to anyone, my car drove like a dog on it for after only half a tank  :scared:.  Im sticking to V Power from now on.  Maybe I was just unlucky and had an 'old' batch or whatever, I dont know.

I travel 12 mile to work and the same back. I used get between 25 - 27 mpg on both standard and v-power fuel however, by just relaxing and keeping my driving smoother with gear changes lower (without making it struggle) etc I've got it up to 36 mpg average by the end of the first leg of the journey!

I completely filled up on 99 ron on Saturday and went driving !

around the country lanes (obviously agressive) but not breaking the speed limit     ave 24 mpg

Then went on Motorway Sunday (M6) seventy mph all the way - 38 mpg

This is in a 2006 56 DSG - Oh it has 3 doors rather than 5 so lighter !

Any the 99's should be fine, I prefer tesco 99 as it gives me more download pull than v power does. Also most the petrol tests I've read, tesco 99 gives more power and torque

Just to update this thread - I saw 36mpg on the way to work this morning - ok I drive like a granny most of the time, but even so!

About 250 miles done and it is almost halfway between 1/4 and 1/2... Im hoping it will stretch to 350 miles, that said I never leave it low, it's my first tank in this car so will probably nip to Halfords at lunchtime and buy some sort of fuel cleaner / additive.

I tend to agree here, although i do tend to get slighty better milage tank for tank on V power! around the 400-425 mile range

Im starting to wonder if my car is actually a 1.6 and not a 2.0T, my new record is 47.2mpg and 470miles to a tank.

Usually i get around 430 and thats even just on ordinary unleaded.
