Blueflame and Milltek - A question
« on: June 23, 2010, 10:52:35 am »
Some of you may know that I’m running a feeler thread for people interested in some custom black tips for the Milltek system.  One concern i have moving forward is that the CAT is quite deep and thus can be seen from the rear of the car.

Just for absolute clarity, it is the CAT that can be seen on the picture below:

I've not really considered Blueflame as they do not seem to offer an equivalent to the Resonated Milltek cat back.  However, i noticed from looking at pictures of Golf’s with the Blueflame exhaust system on that the rear was quite different.  Can someone confirm that the reason the car does not have any back boxes on the picture below because this is a decat exhaust system:

If it is then does anyone have any images of the Blueflame system on an Edition 30 with the cat at the back?  I'm wondering if it protrudes like the Milltek system.

Some members have suggested asking Milltek for a shallow back box but my responses from Milltek have pointed me in the direction of VW Racing.  Still no response from them as of today.  I’m unsure of Milltek will only provide a shallow back box if they have a minimum order.  If so, I may change my feeler thread to include Black tips AND a shallow back box.  Makes it a little harder to get 5 people who are happy for both custom elements but I’m sure many will not have an issue.

Hope you guys can help.  :drinking:

Chris.

I've got a Milltek on my GTI & ''YES'' you can see the box a  bit but it's not bad & you don't see it when driving anyway, just enjoy the noise. :happy2:

Ahhh...so the CAT is nicely tucked behind the rear valance like for the standard CAT.

Can i assume then that the boxes for Blueflame are shallow as standard compared to the Milltek?  Would explain some of the extra noise from the Blueflame perhaps?

the cat is way further up. the back box is what you see hanging, have to wait for mat or someone to confirm but the cat back on blueflame i think has one box but milltek has two. i think!  :chicken:

Ahh...ok...so if i understand correctly the CAT(s) on both systems is further back on the car.  The back box that can be seen on the Milltek system is in essence the silencer to reduce noise levels.  On the Blueflame system this is much smaller thus subduing the noise levels less.

Is that correct?

Just to clarify, the CAT is the catalyst unit and it is located on the downpipe app. 50cm after the turbo. The reason for the part you want is called a catback is that it is located after the Downpipe which has the cat fitted to it, so the part you want is "Behind the cat", get it??
The box just in front of the rear bumper is an resonance box, some exhaust has none, some has one and others have two of them, basically the more boxes the quiter the exhaust system is. So to answer your originally question, no it is not the cat

My own APR RSC 3" system:

You can see 2 boxes, the one closest to the front of the car is the RSC box and the rear a normal silencer box.

This box you are asking about is NOT the CAT

Over the top mod list ;o)

I don't suppose anyone has any sound/video clips of a GTi/Ed30 with just the cat back Blueflame system on rather than the full system?

In all fairness i actually thought the noise from Matt's sound clip was very nice.  Unsure what it is like from inside the car.  Put the foot down today in mine with the stock exhaust and i actually thought it was quite boomy. Is that just me?  :rolleye:

Blue flame do not do a non-res version as it would be to loud, their res version is loud enough to scare most people.  :happy2:

I think i am right in saying that Milltek acknowledge, their rear box is very unsightly when viewed in a following car and i think they are doing something about it, Maybe they can sort you out, one of their test boxes they have made. I Know they tried a half non- res version for Steve P, when he had his Eddie.  :happy2:

....As TC says, Milltek are very aware of the unsightly rear box and are doing/have done something about it. Give Charlie a call at Milltek and refer to my custom shallow back box. Failing that, try a call to Phil Millington - He definitely knows what's on my car and if he says something will be done, it will!

Thanks guys for this advice.  I will contact Milltek by phone and see what info i can pull out.

I have contacted VW Racing about their system.  As mentioned by Robin previously and as many will know on this forum, VW Racing offer the Milltek system but with the shallow rear box.  If i can't get anywhere with Milltek i will probably pursue with VW Racing.

I spoke to Matt today at VWR and he advised their system is in between the Resonated and Non Resonated Milltek system.  Sounds like a good compromise IMO.
