MPG issue
« on: December 10, 2011, 01:37:59 pm »
Hi guys, I have a strong feeling my golf has an mpg issue as over a full tank I'm only getting around 190-200 miles, (fiilled with VPower) it's working out to an average of 17-19mpg which I find ridiculous.... The tests I've carried out over the past few weeks have been on very short journeys to be fair but even on the motorway according to the trip I'm getting around 21-22mpg over a 10 mile journey...

I've heard of a device called vagcom that can identify most faults etc....is there anyone on the forum who lives near Edinburgh that could poss run a check or can anyone recommend a garage that's nearby

Thanks

. Could be any one of a number of things, first thing I would change would be the spark plugs, then it gets more expensive, would have a look at the lamba sensors and afm. Data logging with vcds would help.

Yeah a scan with VCDS (VagCom) would be a good start to idenitfy any potential faults but also bear in mind that the GTi is pretty bad on fuel when used on short journeys and that the winter weather and low temps will reduce economy quite a bit too, my ed30 is on average 5 mpg worse through the winter months compared to summer..

Even on short journeys 200mi from a 55L tank is not right. I regularly get 360mi from a tank not driving particularly carefully

I normally get about 270-300 miles to a full tank of v power, but i only live about 2 miles away from work so that doesnt really help as the car doesnt get up to temperature in that short time, i got just over 400 miles to a tank drving from bristol to truro and back though  :happy2:

Am i wrong in thinking that economy should go up when its cold? I drove to bcs today to have my exhaust checked over and the tips changed and i only got 31.3mpg on a 175m cruise down, but got around 37 in the summer

Economy goes DOWN in winter, colder/denser air=more fuel=less MPG.

On a plus note power goes up due to denser air and more fuel  :happy2:

In summer on a long drive I can easily get 39mpg with a steady motorway cruise.

Currently on 327 miles from a tank full and have 1/4 tank left yet, have been driving like my Nan tho!
