Golf R vs 135i
« on: July 01, 2010, 05:31:00 pm »

BMW 135i DKG vs. Volkswagen Golf R DSG

  • Engine: i6, biturbo / i4, turbo
  • Power: 306 hp / 270 hp
  • Torque: 400 Nm / 350 Nm
  • Gearbox: 7-speed-DKG / 6-speed-DSG
  • Weight: 1535 kg / 1537 kg
  • Vmax.: 250 km/h (both)

  • 0-100 km/h: 5,1 s / 5,5 s
  • 0-160 km/h: 11,6 s / 13,3 s
  • 0-200 km/h: 18,5 s / 23,6 s
  • Flexibility (80-120 km/h) in 5th: 6,1 s / 6,6 s
  • 18 m slalom: 65,6 km/h / 64,9 km/h
  • 110 m evasive test: 137,5 km/h / 133,8 km/h
  • Braking (100-0 km/h): 36,1 m / 37,1 m (warm)
  • Avg. fuel consumption: 11,7 / 11,2 l/100 km
  • Basic price: €42.360,- / €38.700,-
Notes from the article:

  • The Golf R won the test because of its praticality and costs. The engine is powerful, the DSG is brilliant. The adaptive suspension is not too comfy.
  • The BMW accelerates better, brakes better and handles better. But it's lost because of its unpractical coupé-body.

thats stupid, you cant compare a 2 door coupe with a hatch back and then disregard the coupe because of space.

Was just going to post something similar along lines of a stupid verdict. :stupid:

You don't buy a coupe for practicality and I think a better comparison would have been the Rocco R vs the 135i

I'd still have the 135i though on blue over the Golf. Choosing between the Rocco R and the 135i would be a damn site harder

Could be lost in the translation from german, but I read it as, if space is of no issue, the 135i wins hands down.

I have driven both, standard and mapped.

135i is better when tuned than the Golf R but it will be rubbish in the winter.

And you will get treated better by the dealers.  Buy a 40k golf R at VW you get treated the same as the man who buys a fox.  Buy a 20 grand  1 series at BMW in fact buy a 12grand mini and you get treated the same as the man who has bought an M5

Which would be bad treatment if it's same as the BMW dealers I went into

Yeah, bit of a generalisation that. I've came across some very poor BMW dealers, and some very good BMW dealers.

Hmm - strange test to say the least, I guess they just picked the most expensive of each in class as the "halo' model??

BMW's are fine in winter, everyone else in Europe seems to get on ok, it's only the UK that grinds to a halt with a few flakes of snow. But then they all use winter tyres on steels, whilst we're spazzing around on low profile summer tyres....
Sideways yo!

....I think it's probably the German language term.

Yep, a strange comparison. My previous car was a 2-seater BMW and really an earlier ancestor of this 135i and I changed it for the Golf. Not for reasons of performance but for simply both passenger and load accommodation. Personally I'd choose the BMW over a Rocco.

DKG is DoppelKupplungGetriebe I believe (dual clutch gearbox)
