Whistle/whine noise from induction on TFSI engine
« on: July 04, 2010, 12:30:43 pm »
I have recently installed an aftermarket intake on my TFSI vRS Octavia, the car is standard apart from the induction kit.
It is a bit of a hybrid from a Pipercross venom kit, but with a Jetex open cone instead of the Pipercross venom filter (as it was too big physically).

From about 4000 rpm onwards on full throttle I get this annoying whistling/whining noise coming from the engine bay.

Here is a video link with exactly the same noise but from a BSH True seal intake, watch the video from about 1:12 onwards

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGysDM-nc0Q

Does anyone else have this problem? Any ideas of how to cure it?
I have checked that the MAF is seated properly and the clamps are tight on the intake.

Here is a pic of my intake:

Please help.

That noise is normal with a k03.

Apparently if you install a reroute-DV kit much like the one on the k04 cars then the noise is said to be greatly reduced.
Without traction power is nothing!

I have lifted the intake pipe, so that it's slightly further from the turbo and it seems to have stopped it. Fingers Crossed.

My Forge Twintake (K03 Mk5 GTI) sounds like this:

^ Sorry, Here's a better sound clip and you can hear some whistling (which I don't hear inside my car):

The same intake can sound different on each individual car according to various other mods.

Is the noise really invasive in the car then on the k03? I can't really hear it on any of the video clips but I am a little mutton Jeff!

Sound is very subjective.. We each hear different things and also focus on different sounds on different days.

Personally I don't find aftermarket intake noises intrusive but I love most things (and females) that make some noise.

I can live with the Darth Vader effect but a continual whistle would be pushing it I think.

I don't hear any continual whistling sounds (Forge Twintake on K03 GTI) and only Darth according to how I use my right foot.

Can you hear the forge DV?

....I'm not sure but I guess it's somewhere in the mix. There's a whipping sound when coming very quickly off the throttle and at other times a 'flutter', some whooshy sounds but not as much as a chavvy dump. No whistling or whining.

I'm planning on getting a twintake but I'm not sure as to whether I should add a forge dv to the mix. I want to hear my engine a little more without waking the neighbours!

....If you want to hear more soundz from your engine bay inside the cabin, fit some aftermarket engine mounts. They'll also kill engine movement and help transfer more of your power onto the tarmac. But beware the slippery slope of modding!

I have actually read those reviews RR. I'm pitting engine mounts on hold for now. Thanks for the info. Gonna re-map my car and add lighter wheels first.  :happy2:
