RNS 510 - Firmware & MFSW issues
« on: July 10, 2010, 07:27:17 pm »
Hi All

I've just had an RNS 510 fitted and everything was fine (nav in highline displayed etc), except the buttons on the MFSW don't work (volume, track skip and mute). The guy who did it said as the unit was european and the car is a UK model, the steering wheel couldn't be coded does that sound right?

I then tried updating the firmware to see if that cured the problem - and the unit refuses to update. I've tried various firmwares and none worked, and I can't figure out why - especially v2760. This is the hardware version information:

This is the process that happens for every update:

Then the error (010306):

Does anyone have any idea what the error means? I've tried burning in imgburn and nero, all at minimum speed, using verbatim dvds and CDs.

Cheers

Si.

Er, no. Volume should work regardless of which Highline screen you are on, and track skip should work if your Highline is on the Audio screen.
Was your MFSW retrofitted or factory? I don't suppose you have access to VCDS? Age of car would be helpful....

I then tried updating the firmware to see if that cured the problem - and the unit refuses to update.
Is there much of a delay between the "Starting SWL" screen and the error screen? Can you play a DVD and an audio CD ok?

'57 DSG GTI alas now gone, but not forgotten....
Now motorway cruising in a 61 Mondeo Titanium X Sport 2.2 TDCi. 500+ miles to a tankful and bucketloads of torque :O Ok, it's not a GTI but it's fun... and that's what counts ;)

MFSW was factory fitted. Car is an 07/07 R32. I don't have access to VCDS.

Not much of a delay - 30 seconds or so (might be less). DVDs and Audio CDs play fine.

It's a 2007 R32. I assume some coding was done as the navigation info is displayed in the highline - but the guy said that because the unit was an EU one (I got it on eBay) and the car was UK the Steering wheel couldn't be coded. I must admit I didn't speak to the tech directly, and it was done at a VW dealer for free as a favour from a friend, so I didn't whinge too much at the time.

I'll hazard a guess its just not properly coded. When you scroll through the MFSW screens (with the RNS turned on) do you see a screen called Audio?

Did this unit replace a MFD2 sat nav?

If you've purchased this from an installer then I would be inclined to get them to come back and code it properly!

Not much of a delay - 30 seconds or so (might be less). DVDs and Audio CDs play fine.
If the DVD drive is working OK then there are two likely problems. Either the firmware you have downloaded is incorrect - there are modified firmware images for Skodas for example that will fail to load on a VW unit, or the download is just corrupted - it happens, always worth downloading again if you are 100% sure it's a valid VW image. It might be that the mods won't like you posting links to firmware images but perhaps if you PM me the source I can help you determine if it's valid or not?

Another possibility is that this is a unit that has been bricked and then repaired. A bricked unit is one that has failed a firmware upgrade in the past and is then rendered useless without a hardware repair. There are a number of causes for a failure to upgrade firmware - some legitimate, some not. The repair for a bricked unit can mean that it cannot then accept further firmware upgrades.

I'm sure there'll be some good news along shortly.......

@ OP, where are you located, as I am sure someone on here will be able to help with VCDS to get it coded correctly.  :happy2:

Yes.
Fair do's regarding the update - I only tried it to see if it would fix the MFSW problem so I'll stop then.

The guy who fitted it is talking a load of bollocks.

The reason your MFSW buttons are not working is due to one of two things

1. The Firmware that is on the MFD3. It has been loaded with a Firmware that has had the PQTable swapped with the wrong model car. Basically each disc has every firmware on it (Seat,VW,Skoda etc) when it goes into the unit it detects which Unit it is in and loads the Appropriate firmware. What has happened is someone has edited the Firmware to get the MFSW working in a Different car. Some people have the same problem with regards the MFSW not working with Skoda etc. The cure in all but one case i know of was editing of the disc by swapping the PQTable.FLI and SKTable.FLI files around.

The only other reason that unit is not working with the MFSW is that the Muppet who installed it ( and he must be judging by the crap he has already fed you) doesn't know how to code it properly.

With regards to the firmware not loading on and the constant error will be down to the burning process. Download the firmware (you should be able to find one on here as i have listed a couple) and then burn it at the slowest possible speed. Make sure afterwards you verify the disc and then you should find it works fine.

Does anyone know of a guide anywhere to the coding required via VCDS to get the MFSW working?
