My new toy!!
« on: July 13, 2010, 11:27:48 pm »
Well after being away for some months after selling my beloved APR Stage Edition 30 documneted on here now thought I'd post my new toy.

It's a car I' owned 6 yrs ago and was featured in VW Driver.

It's a special MK2 16V with a huge spec which I will list later.

Enjoy

Here's some more detail of my pride and joy!

Spec of CFJ is typical of the early 90's Tim Stiles Racing / BRM / GTI Engineering theme although each used different ways to capacity increases and cam specs but the 2 litre set up was essentially all fairly similar.

I managed to source the cams from Bill after 16 valve cam specs had been extensively tested by a well known/ respected engine builder in the US...Bill/Chris may remember his name.

Rather than choosing the normal straight 264/266/ 268 or 276 route tests showed using 268/276 produced a good spread of torque and power up top!

The set up was fined tuned by both TSR and Stealth using the warm up reg mod and vernier but essentially I had a brand new metering head which was fettled by TSR following their experience of setting up the Slick 50 and RainX cars.

The engine a 9a block was stripped and balanced and ARP fastners were used where possible and a thicker steel head gasket was used in conjunction with the polished head which had been on the car in it's early 1.8 days.

The airbox was given the usual treatment and an oil cooler was fitted in the build. The rest I have documented below with help from Andy. Originally the car sat on TA Koni's with Eibach springs and ARB's but is now on the Eibach coilovers.

The box was a Maurice Reeves item sporting a Quaiffe which survived for years at Combe the only issues being a couple of clutch issues and flywheel failure due to the high revs. The box has been rebuilt by Andy with a shorter final drive which I'm looking forward too.

The plan is to further beefen up the clutch flywheel area with a plate and sourcing some stronger bolts to ensure nothing goes amiss in the future.

The car has done little mileage since it's been away but I will need to treat some minor bodywork on the arches under the plastic trim and possibly a new drivers door unless it's repariable where the dreaded tin worm has got to it.

Here's the basic spec:

1990 16v 3 door shell
TSR 9A engine stripped lightened and balanced in conjunction with split duration Schrick cams on KJet (ARP fastners used where possible)
201bhp (flywheel) & 160lbft @ Stealth 2004 with warm up reg mod.
Magnex 4 into 1 manifold - Full Remus system
Ignition setting 12` BTDC
Ignition leads - standard
Plugs - Bosch Super 4
Airbox has the lower section mostly removed .. JR (blue) panel filter
020 16V box & shortened FD
Quaife ATB (Previously standard ratios)
Eibach Coilover suspension (Previously Koni TA's + Eibach Springs)
Eibach front and rear antirollbars
Front wishbones - rear bushes Powerflex, front inner bushes standard
Recent new MK3 Top Mounts
Front camber 1.5` / Toe @ 0`
Rear axle bushes : Poweflex
280mm Brembo discs / Lucas 54 calipers / Pagid FR pads / braided lines (Now with MintexPads)
Rear brakes standard
Road Wheels - BBS RJ 6.5 x 15 ET33
Road Tyres - Toyo T1-S 195/50
Track wheels - Rial 7 x 15 ET37
Track tyres - Dunlop DO1J 205/50 + 195 x 55
Recaro recliner driver`s seat
Momo 3 spoke steering wheel

The car has had a full glass out repaint and new door and factory wings together with a full under body restoration .
Thought abot a half cage but I like the original look of these.

Been back at Combe already.....RS day....!!
Ian

Yeah brought it back and just finished getting it restored to it's former glory.

Will get some better pics posted up.

Finding good MK2's in the right spec is becoming more difficult but this car had everything done to make it very competant on track too.

I know I know....

I'll blame my mechanic on that one .....it's got come off for MOT as 4 branch needs welding on a couple of joints.

Did it's usual 1.22 round Combe with a bit more to come.....in comparison my Edition 30 was 1.24 on APR stage 1 Dunlop Inters OE suspension and Yellow stuff pads.

Did it on APR stage 2 330+ on KW Clubsports on normal road rubber (doh!) and it hovered around 1.24

What I really needed was a diff, clutch, bigger Intercooler, big brakes roll bars and new track rubber....about another £5k+ hence that's why I went back to a MK2 for trackdays. Cheap and cheerful but good track pedigree even with light mods!

I couldn't justify shelling out further for the Edition 30 even though it's a brilliant package as standard you're always chasing times. You need deep pockets!

Will get back to another MK5/6 or even like the new Rocco R at some stage soon with missus in a new job but will keep MK2 as it's only retain/appreciate in value especially in this spec and condition.

Zymol'd everything and waxoiled inner arches sills and new under seal. REngine's still a real peach...will be set up at Stealth by Vince soon and will post plots and new pics.

A very nice piece of work, I went snifffing around a similar build Andrew Chappel owned a while back and then got traded in again, red one if you remember it?

Sadly I didn't have something to tow it with, as it was an animal on the road to say the least!

Are you going to take it any further this time, cage/seat etc? or just enjoy as it is?
Sideways yo!

Tony

I've already got a Recaro Speciualist M seat in situ...new when fitted to Recaro base frame...lovely and comfortable and supportive.

I usually run it without rear seats etc on track but I have considered a half cage but am reluctant due keeping it looking OE as possible in case I sell in the future.

I am considering going back to Koni Coilovers althought I had Koni adjustables all round and Eibach springs...a nice combo for road and track. The Eibach coilovers are stiffer...better for track.

KW's are nice but I priced similar Clubsports as before and they are £1600 for a MK2!!

Need to get full set up on Engine and sort VDO gauges and exhaust. Got no stereo apart from the engine!!
