What is it with dealerships and not wanting the work?
« on: July 19, 2010, 11:04:35 pm »
Hey folks, bit of a rant but i've been shopping around to get a cam belt & water pump, along with a DSG oil and filter change - maybe with some extras like cruise control retrofitted.

My car's on 38k on a 2005 - I am waiting for the service book to arrive so I can try and contact the last garage (prior to jun service) and see if they changed the cam belt/water pump as it should have been done @ 4 years, and the previous owner no longer lives at the address on V5 so can't contact him - when I looked in engine bay - alternator? Belt looked brand new... I know that doesn't mean anything but makes you think it might have had all belts done.

Anyway... I called a VW Specialist, got all the sales talk, and a final sum of £700 which was a bit overpriced, that was for a full service, brake fluid change & cam belt\pump\dsg oil filter change.

Considering I don't need the service (just changed everything inc sparks myself last weekend even though it was serviced by garage I bought from in June)

I then call VW who say, it's £160 flat fee to fit cruise control... I decide to go down to the dealership, give them my chassis number and ask for a price on the belt / cruise / dsg oil filter change - I wait 10 minutes, they then say they need to check it out further and will call me... That was Friday . Not heard since! Jokers!!! It's all flash havin free tea and coffee machines and a nice showroom but call me impatient I am not using them even if they offer a good price now.

Rant over lol! :)

PS> I also said why is it £100 extra to fit a water pump when doing the cambelt and they claimed it was more parts charge, so I said i'd supply an OE Water pump all legit etc they said thats fine - but we will charge you labour still!!!

Is that the same labour they charge for someone changing brake discs, but asking can they change the pads at the same time ... "Erm no sir the pads would be extra labour"
(Thats a joke but probably not far off!)

If you decide to make the trip to Leeds I can put you in touch with a VW mechanic who does jobs on the side for cash.

Can't publish details for obvious reasons. PM me if you need the info.
No Golf anymore.
Enjoyed the last five years of ownership of Mk5 & 6 GTIs.
Plus an excellent forum for knowledge and new ways to deplete the bank account.
Thank You Everyone.

They don't seem to be interested in selling me a car either. I've been trying to buy a used GTI for the last two months and have rung and emailed various main dealers to set up test drives and ask about previous owners etc and so far only one guy ever contacted me back.

Maybe it's a way of finding out who is a serious buyer; make them desperately beg to be allowed to part with huge wads of cash.

Thought I should make it clear.  I do not know the mechanic involved other than he replaced both rear hubs, fitted a new CV boot, had the car geometry done and performed the MOT.

I cannot fault his work, as he even let me watch/help and offered tips and pointers.  By the same token I do not vouch for his work either.  I am happy with the work done and over the moon with his rates for both time and parts.

I am not a friend of the mechanic nor do I have any financial interest in recommending him.

And finally - so he doesn't get into trouble at work - is the only reason I am not posting his details on an open forum.

Wow got all that of my chest.

dont bother with the dealers they just butt f*ck you they charge min of 85 pound an hour for labour fact. they wanted 400 pound to replace my brake light in the spoiler to pass its mot redrobin gave me a guide i done it in ten mins  just had to buy part from vw for 40 quid they said you have to cheese wire the spoiler off b.s so they can use the cheese wire as a butt plug and get out of my life go a reliable recomended garage much cheaper got my timing beelt done and major service for 450 runs great vw 400+ just for cambelt
