Uh-oh, there may be trouble ahead :(

Hi all,

I fear i know what might be causing this issue but thought i'd put it out there to the masses to see if my hunch is right.....

Whilst driving along earlier i noticed a puff of blue-ish smoke when i went to accelerate away from a junction. The thing is, i can only get it to do it if ive been coasting along for a reasonable distance (i say coasting but the car is a DSG, so its just cruising in whatever gear it has selected, no accelerator pedal) then go to press the loud pedal a bit to keep going.

To do this i can only do it when i've been driving down a few of the long hills in my area. It doesnt smoke on start up from either cold or hot, never see it when driving along generally at all, only if i let it roll down these long hills then press the pedal a bit to keep going once it levels out (so not flooring it).

My thoughts were this is probably coming from the turbo and so is probably oil seals inside it. I have also noticed a bit of oil at the bottom front of the engine bay under an inlet pipe - When standing in front of the car, its at the bottom toward the right side of the car at the front. So i assume this is where the turbo has leaked in to the inlet track and thats the lowest point its acculumating from as i've seen others report oil in this area before (I think)

So, assuming the turbo is dying? (Boost seems ok but i dont often nail it) What are my options? I would assume its either a turbo service / rebuild somewhere to replace seals? Or get another turbo.  I've never had to get a turbo serviced before so has anyone got any recommendations for this and any idea of cost? This also then begs the question of how much more would it cost to get a K04 and go along that route instead.

Fuel pump seals leaking and mixing with the engine oil can produce blue smoke.

Either way Id try and avoid driving it and get it to a tuner. If turbo is on the way out for example you dont want it to go out with a bang and increase your bill.

Yes standard fuel pump, altho believe i should have an APR HPFP waiting for me at home - sods law i buy some nice shiney bits and something else needs attention

tell me about it, has happened to me a few times, it came to the point where 6 months later the mods are still sitting in my garage lol

I wouldnt necessarily condem the turbo just yet.
I would agree with poverty to get a competent garage to go over it sooner rather than later though 
You have a stage2 catch can fitted, is this recent addition?
sounds like sucking oil in on the overun, through turbo seals,piston rings or some other seal.
some basic health checks should pinpoint the issue.

would suggest not waiting , cos if its the turbo and it lets go , theres a risk all that debri will make it into the engine and risk further damage.
should be able to get one from a scrapyard or on exchange.
or maybe even consider an upgrade to K04?

whats the general oil consumption generally Ant?

The catch can was put on the car as part of the group buy by the previous owner, so its been on there a while now.

Oil consumption, i recently topped it up from around the minimum mark to about 3/4 up the measurement area - something like 300-400ml i think? Cant remember exactly and its using the VW Longlife stuff 5w30. And when i got the car a couple of months ago and i checked it was about the same area and i think i've done around 2k miles maybe a bit more.

Im gonna try get that bottom boost hose off to see how much oil is in there and clean it out and see if its still occuring in case its a build up in the intake pipework thats now getting sucked thru - maybe being optimistic but its worth cleaning either way.

Car is parked up now too, no biggie as i walk to work anyway.

K04 was what i was considering if it does need to come off but no doubt requires a lot more parts than i can afford at the moment - would assume it needs a diff downpipe, injectors, relocate DV, map changing and few other bits and bobs. So it might end up being just a service for my current one. All comes down to the £££ and how much OT i can wangle from work lol

Downpipe is the same and you can run the K04 without a remap, so you can spread the bill out a bit, IF it is the turbo

Wish i had got that K04 that was recently sold by someones mate as i very nearly did buy it too! Ah well, sure they'll be another along soon lol
