Squealing on full boost
« on: July 27, 2010, 04:38:01 pm »
The last few days my edition 30 has started making a squealing noise on full boost, the noise happens at 3 rpm and stops by the time the rev counter
gets to 4 rpm. Im currently running revo stage one and with my car being dsg i also have the revo dsg map.

I dont think its the dsg clutch slipping as the revs are not spiking with lack of acceleration. The squeal is hard to describe it sounds like cheap tyres losing grip on a roundabout. Ive had a look in the engine bay and no hoses etc look/feel loose. The noise is not that intrusive to the cabin as i need the radio muted to hear the squeal.

The cars being looked at by my local revo dealer on thursday, im just posting to share my woes and find out if anyone else has had a similar problem?

I understand hurdy has had a slipping dsg at one point during his cars development, did the dsg squeal hurdy when it was slipping?

Mechanical metal on metal squeal or rubbery belt squeal?
Sideways yo!

No it doesnt feel down on power or if it is not enough to really notice.

With regards to the noise its making, i cant put my finger on whether its metal on metal or a belt squeal. Its a high pitched noise. Its hard to describe lol
It sounds like car tyres losing grip in a corner and squealing sort of sound.

Ive had the revo software for well over a year now and its been running sweet until this week.

Im hoping its not the dsg or the turbo starting to give up. However it doesnt feel down on power. When the noise happens ive watched the rev counter closely and it doesnt spike, the car keeps on pulling.

Might be caused by a faulty exhaust gasket. I had the same sort of thing happen in my Impreza. We thought it was the turbo on the way out but ended up being the gasket between the up-pipe and the turbo. The high pressure at full boost caused the air to leak.

I get this to occasionally and have never been able to pin it down to a particular set of events apart from using its under heavier load.

Mine sounds like a high pitched whistle varying very quickly in pitch but the tone rises with the revs.

Comes and goes. turbo back pipe going on next week so if it's a leak - that should sort it..if not then i have to coninue to worry until something gives...

Just got the car back, they smoke tested all hoses etc no leaks. They put the car on the rolling road and the cars is running expected boost, so its still running the correct boost levels etc for revo stage one. They visually inspected the turbo and checked the dump valve and everything seems fine.

They cannot find a fault with the car at all, they feel its just excessive induction noise. I have to also admit that i am very fussy and pick up on small
noises etc very quickly. The noise can only be heard at certain times and only on full throttle at 3 thousand revs - 3.5 thousands revs. Also to be able to hear the noise the radio needs to be muted and the road surface has to be smooth otherwise the road noise drowns it out.

They put the car back to stock mode and the noise is no longer there. So im guessing upping the boost casues the excessive induction noise at 3 - 3.5 revs.

The car feels as quick as it ever has done on revo stage one, so as long as the noise doesn't get any louder or the noise develops further across the rev range, im going to leave it as it is  :driver:

Yeah seems so Alastairc, you called the noise a high pitched whistle and i called it a squeal but there is definitely a high pitched noise in between 3 - 3.5 at full throttle. Does yours do it in the same rev range as mine or does it do it right through the rev range on Wide open throttle?

more of a whistle/fast chriping noise - almost the same between 3 and 4 tho...mostly when foot to floor!

Well if your turbo back pipe solves the noise let me know, it will give me an excuse to get a full milltek exhaust system.

Damn this forum  :signLOL:
