part two.

next question then guys

my work lap top has un-doubtably become much much slower than before.  it seems to take forever to start up now, and has recently been freezing when opening new programs up, also clicking on the start button sometimes akes ages to respond.

my work lap top is not especially fast, but its never been an issue before.  there is 89gb of free disc space of a total 111gb, so its not over loaded.

with just the windows explorer open the computer is using 900Mb of memory. is there anyway of reducing this it never used to be this high

1st thing, download ccleaner (http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/)

in tools and advanced deselect "temp folders older than 24hours"

run the cleaner tools, selecting as many options as you want

Do the same with the registry tool (make a backup when prompted on the 1st run) you will need to run it several times.

next click start run and type "msconfig" select the startup tab, using http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/ go through and remove the un-needd ones...which will be pretty much all of them apart from AV programs (print screen and send me the list and i will tell you what to leave checked if you want)

once finished select exit without restart

next click start --> run and type cmd (if using vista or win 7 run this as an admin) then type "chkdsk /r /f" and presss enter, then type "y" and enter again and restart your machine.

It may be an idea to post the pcs specs....
Also you may want to look under msconfig to stop unecessary services from starting.

a combination of running spybot and adaware usually sorts it.

1st thing, download ccleaner (http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/)

in tools and advanced deselect "temp folders older than 24hours"

run the cleaner tools, selecting as many options as you want

Do the same with the registry tool (make a backup when prompted on the 1st run) you will need to run it several times.

next click start run and type "msconfig" select the startup tab, using http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/ go through and remove the un-needd ones...which will be pretty much all of them apart from AV programs (print screen and send me the list and i will tell you what to leave checked if you want)

once finished select exit without restart

next click start --> run and type cmd (if using vista or win 7 run this as an admin) then type "chkdsk /r /f" and presss enter, then type "y" and enter again and restart your machine.

thats pretty good advice also.

Another useful little program is a util called Hijack this . Run that and delete any BHO (Browser Hijack Objects ) that look dodgy. that should sort you out!

Hijackthis is a bit old but still useful. Love CCleaner. Once cleared up around 10GB of crap on a mate's laptop.

When it comes to antivirus softwares and firewalls I'd say go with Avast (antivirus software) and Kerio (personal firewall) to prevent your pc sending threat e-mails to the iran government  :signLOL:

I use those and they have kept my pc clean few years now, for free.

x3 CCleaner. And if nothing works: format C and re-install Windows/OS you have.

VRSY

Sorry to sort of hijack your thread but in the last 24 hours my 'Windows Essentials Security' has been going mad picking up hundreds of threats all related to some sort of virus called 'win32-zafi-b'

I have downloaded Spyware Doctor 7 - free version and it has scanned my system and picked up 16 high level infections and 532 threats but the free version does not remove them.

My essentials security programme does not seem to be able to clear this repeating virus, it seems to jump from one file to the next. It took my PC nearly 24 hours to do a scan and clean, but the threats still keep appearing.

I will try following some of the advice already in the thread but anyone got any specific advice on this issue

Thanks in advance

Boot up your computer in safe mode.

Best thing is to extract the hard drive and attach to another computer via USB caddy, then scan as an external hard drive.
