Exhaust Question - how many pieces?
« on: August 10, 2010, 10:50:07 am »
How many sections does the Mk5 exhaust come in?

Looking underneath mine it seems to be a one piece affair that combines the backbox and centre section - as below.

Or am I being stupid?   :stupid:

I think the baffles in the backbox are a bit knackered - so keen to replace if I can source a cheap backbox.

Cheers
Richard.

Ah - so if I wanted the backbox replaced with an aftermarket one then I'd need to buy a centre section too.

Not necessarily...

When most VAG vehicles leave the factory they have a one piece exhaust as it's easier to fit when the car is being assembled and more 'gas-tight'.  As and when sections eventually require replacing, the dealer or independent fitter then cuts the existing one peice system to suit the new section which is oversized at the joint to enable fitment with a clamp and paste.  Therefore as long as an aftermarket back box is designed to match the diameter of the factory system it will fit.

Hope this helps.
OEM+ 2005 GTI DSG (high factory standard spec and upgraded with S3 alloy hubs, S3 alloy wishbones, Bilstein B8s and VWR springs by my own hands) owned since 2008 and still loving it!
