is there any precautions when removing the trim from around the DSG stick ?, I know the manual just pops up but there's cables on the DGS trim and I don't want to damage anything

No its fine. Just lever/pull the front up and it just comes out fairly easily. No tools required.

I've just put the open cubby in my .:R so I know how it goes. It is quite big, enough for an iPhone.
