Monza's with white worm - warranty offer - decision?
« on: August 11, 2010, 02:23:42 pm »
Hi there,

Looking your opinion, got my Monza II checked by VW dealer and yes they agree that white worm has just started on all four wheels, they will only replace one wheel as the previous owner had kerbed the other three.

Decision,

1. Get the wheel replaced under warranty and then sell the set on, leaving only three rims needing refurbed by the new owner and buy another set of alloys.

So what price would be respectible for the above set?

OR

2. Get them fixed myself and consider RedRobins choice of powercoating the alloys, so the white worm will never appear again.

What would you advise?

Might as well get all four rims refurbed by the same company rather than one mismatched unit. A refurbished set I imagine would command a higher price than corroded rims.

The corrosion isn't bad, it has only started around the wheel nut holes. Marks are only 3mm in size.

The kerbing is more noticeable.

Already priced to have them refurbed here in N.Ireland and only two places can do the Diamond cut, quoting £110 + Vat per wheel.

Checked out about getting them power coated, also only one place here that can do it, haven't got a price yet.

Options are limited.

If its showing white worm no where near the kerbing then the 2 are entirely separate and i'd argue they should be replaced as the white worm has occured irrespective of the kerbing

I have tried that and the guy who deals with the warranty issues, stated that he has tried this before and VW won't have anything to do with the wheel if kerbing has happened.

Just like RR said, they see kerbing as someone who doesn't look after there wheels/car. Therefore no replacement.

Can try another VW dealer.

....Not so much a judgement by VW of an owner's standard of care but a fixed policy/rule that any kerbing, however caused, voids the wheel warranty. Kerbing and hence breaking the lacquer seal is one of the events which subsequently allows white worm surface corrosion to start and then spread.

I have taken this line with VW, as if the wheel is corroding in a separate area to the damage, then the kerbing is irrelevant. I'm ready to go through Trading Standards if I don't get a satisfactory outcome.

VW Dealer refused warranty on the nearside wheels due to kerb marks despite worm around the wheel nut holes. http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,17699.msg252106.html#top

I rang VW Customer Care who said I needed to get the dealer to email photographs to them, and they would let me know. I'll post up once I have heard back.

Can I ask who is it in N.Ireland that can do the diamond cutting as i didn't relise that any place here did it and who can do the powder coating?

Nu-luk wheels of Carrickfergus and Lenster Engineering of Lisburn both can do the diamond finish. Nu-luk will take them with the Tyres on the rims and rebalance them after the refurb, Lenster will not accept the rims with Tyres fitted.

Been told only one place in Dunmurray that can do the powder coating. Nu-luk offers powder coating, don't know if it is in house or sent out.

I hope this helps.

Take photos and ask them to email them to vw warranty assessors. Mine wouldn't replace mine because they weren't sure vw would honour the warranty. The assessor very quickly replied that 4 replacements were on the way. I had a curbing on one wheel and they said because te corrosion wasn't connected then the corrosion warranty stood!

The place in Lisburn is called Lester Engineering! Didn't realise there were that many folk on here in N. Ireland.

My Monza II's are all unkerbed, but I'm out of warranty and whiteworm has started to appear on two wheels, also around the wheel nuts. So I'd be interested to know how you get on if you go down the refurb route.

On a side note I've had alloys in the past refurbed by both Lester and Nu Luk. Both are very good at there job. But goin by images of diamond cutting on Nu Luks website, I'd prob get them to do them.

VW called this afternoon to say that they won't replace the remaining wheels, as 'the corrosion could have been caused by force applied to the wheelnuts'. (Hmm, despite this being a foreseeable situation for wheels, then?). They said that it was the dealer's decision, and although in their view, if the dealer was changing the 2 unkerbed wheels for corrosion away from the rim (which they are), they should be changing all 4. But they can't tell the dealer to do that (oh, really?). And that wheels aren't a VW warranty item.

Kinda (actually hugely) annoyed. Will have to visit the dealer again to have a full & frank conversation about this.
