fitting Passat switches to Mk5 golf
« on: January 31, 2009, 11:54:35 am »
I just thought i would post a little guide of how to fit the Passat parts with extra chrome bits , it may also help those who wish to fix faulty parts too, i bought the set from eBay and used the panel tools that i have had a while, if you require any help just ask (ps i accept no responsibility if you damage anything whilst dismantling your own car)

The tools i use

The parts

Light switch,

use this guide (as posted by Very Cherry)

–   Switch off ignition and all electrical consumers.
–   Turn rotary grip of light switch to position “0”.
–   Push in rotary grip of light switch -1- and turn it clockwise slightly -2-.

–   Hold grip in this position and pull light switch out of dash panel using grip -3-.

Disconnect connector -arrow-

Installing

–   Fit connector to light switch. (as above)

–   Hold light switch and press rotary part of light switch firmly inwards -1- and turn slightly to right -2-.
–   Hold grip in this position and insert light switch in dash panel -3-.
–   Turn grip of light switch to position “0”, release and engage switch.

simple really, just hope it isnt locked in like mine was, then simply remove the plug and put new one in and slide it into place

Drivers handle

I pulled it from the front, you will see the two clips on the right hand side, when these are free you will then need to free the two metal clips at the bottom of the handle near the back, these are a little harder to remove but a little pressure and they come out, dont pull to hard as the handle is held in by 3 plastic pop in bits, again gentle pressure and they soon come out, then its simply removing the old switches by pushing a flat blade under the clips and the old electric unit pops out, pull out electrics and instal new unit, then re fit electrics and pop handle back on

passengers handle

For these you remove the bottom part of the handle, start at the back of the handle (as in picture), and pop the handle out, the handle is then held in via two metal clips and a plastic pop clip right at the top, the handle pulls directly out from the door, do not pull up or down etc, just pull it directly outwards , then you can see the switch, i again removed the switch by prying it out with a flat device, when out pop off electrics put in new unit, put electrics back in and renistall the unit, handle pops back on and jobs done (well, after you do the other two handles)

And all done

Afraid so by the looks of things, and yes...theres a guide for that too lol

tbh i think maybe leave the switch standard, your eye doesnt need to be drawn to it and you'll never really see it anyway

although it could bug you

Nice write up.

Where'd you get the removal tools from?

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.
