Faulty DV

Can anyone tell me the tell tale signs of a faulty diverter valve please?

Loss of boost.

Car will feel sluggish and not pick up as quickly as normal. The severity of this depends on how bad the DV is split.

If you know someone with VCDS they can log the car and tell you :happy2:

Ive had the car checked on the vcds and no faults came up? The car feels sluggish,wont pick up as quick as normal and is hesitant at times. Ive replaced the plugs but now im thinking is it the coilpacks,maf sensor or DV valve???

A faulty DV wrong bring up a traditional fault code. You need to set up logs and take it for a drive then review the logs on boost etc.

As alan says. The car needs logging.

Log blocks 115 & 114 and these will tell you if you have a boost leak :happy2:

Out of interest, where is the DV valve and could you tell it is worn or split just by looking at it??

Have a search - someone's posted a pic. Basically you would have to extract the DV to look at it. You wouldn't be able to just pop your head under the bonnet and spot a torn DV with a quick glance.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

DV is attached to the turbo. As stealth says you cant just see from visual. It requires the car to be on axle stands, under tray off and DV removing.  :happy2:

What car do you have?  If im going by your user name then you have an s3?  Sounds like you dont have anything to log the car with, but on the S3 the dv is very easy to get to and most came with the revision d valve which tend to be very reliable.  If you look at the engine then the valve is right at the front to the right of the throttle body.  Its held in by 3 screws.  If you do have the old valve then it will have an orange diaphram and you will be able to see if its split or not.  If you dont have an S3 then the valve is bolted directly to the turbo and you can get at this by going under the car and its above the drivers side driveshaft.

Never noticed you have a S3

If so then its as Alex says at the front right of the engine as you look at it. In the same place as you see in the pic of my engine. Just to the left of where the cold air feed comes into the engine.

Thanks for the help guys!
Ive got a MKV GTI. My last car was a 03reg S3 hence the username.
Im pretty sure my car had the diverter valve upgraded when it had the custom code remap installed by the previous owner, not too sure what the difference is between the standard and upgraded DV?

The DV on the gti and ed30/s3 are in different places. The oem one was weak and prone to splitting if the car was remapped. The uprated ones like forge's overcame this weakness. However VW have revised their DV and the latest one won't break.

If yours was uprated, it's unlikely to have failed.

Thats what i would have thought too.
So assuming the dv is working fine and ive replaced the plugs, do you think replacing the fuel filter and coilpacks are next?
