Black Valance to Facelift Colour Coding - thoughts?

Hello all,

My new (to me) 2005 GTi looks a bit tired.

I intend to have the front end resprayed to liven it up, valet the inside and do a few other little bits and pieces to get her sorted out.

As I am going to be having a man use some paint, I wondered if you guys can help me out... My 2005 car features a bugbear I have about the MKV - the black plastic rear valance, black plastic sideskirts and so on.

Later on (from about 2007 or whatever) cars seemed to arrive with colour coded valances that transformed the look of the car (much better) and the same for the sideskirts.

Can anyone advise me if these later parts were the same as mine but painted (seems doubtful) or if the newer parts are straight fit onto my car (also seems doubtful) etc?

....Waay back in 2005, that was my bugbear too - Makes the GTI look like a Ford Ka, though very much depending on body colour.

Only the Edition30 left the VW factory with colour coded valances.

I bought Mk5 R32 valance sides and rear and colour coded them. But beware that modding is a very slippery slope!

Parts will fit straight on your Golf and come smooth primed rather than dimple surfaced black.

Mine is red, so like yours - it looks bad with black valances. And I hate it for that very reason - it looks cheap!!

OK so R32 kit is not a bad option - is that as per your pics below? Is the rear a full bumper or just valance? How does it fit with the exhausts (aren't they central on the R32?)

Side skirts too? Just the same sounds good.

What about the front on yours mate?

Don't worry about me and modding - I have owned a few 'fast' modded cars in the past.... The Golf is my daily driver.... I have a little something special in the garage ;)

^ Rear is Mk5 R32, primed smooth, available from VW dealers. The cut-outs allow a variety of exhaust configurations. My exhaust trim is OSIR carbon but others are available.

So (last question I promise, maybe) would the rear smooth R32 main bumper allow a cutout (diffuser) that fits the stock exhaust?

I am TRYING to keep the Golf sensible as the next mod on the 'other' car is £10k.

....Yes, the R32 bumper includes cutouts for stock GTI config exhaust as well as central R32 pipes, and quads like mine.

Failing spending £300 on an R32 bumper, and a similar amount for an ED30 rear.  You could always just have the partial colour coding done, which I think looks similar to the S3 rear.

Will cost about £100 from a body shop to do this.

I've booked in for exactly this with an excellent local Bodyshop I've used before. He is confident he can rub the 'coarse' skin down with a machine polish type thng - sorry for non tech term lol.

Any tips on how to achieve a good finish?

Any cracks/chips/strange wear occurring on the 'seam' between painted/not painted?

This would be very difficult. I went down the R32 rear end route and had to change my exhaust. Spent more than I initially thought I would on the rear but I think it was worth it!







Your best bet is to colour code the original bumper if you want to keep the stock exhaust system for now.

If you want a Mk32 rear bumper but want to keep the GTI exhaust configuration, you can buy an aftermarket exhaust trim. OSIR, via TTshop, offer several and it can be in black FRP rather than more expensive carbonfibre.

I had a look into this RR, before opting for the genuine R32 valance. I couldn't find an OSIR or anyone else who makes a rear valance for the R32 to suit the GTI exhaust. They do however do many different types of valances for the GTI bumper....

Maybe I was looking in the wrong place?
