Removing the Airbag
Drop the steering wheel all the way down and extend reach as much room as possible.
Turn the wheel one 1/4 turn to the right from straight ahead position
Now using a flat blade screwdriver unclip the airbag by placing the screwdriver into the hole on the back of the steering wheel and lever the spring catch in to the centre, Now turn the wheel 180° and repeat, the air bag will pop off. Horn may sound so best to disconnect battery.
The wiring comes from the flappy paddles and plugs into the blanking pieces that are on the steering wheel at the moment and from there the ribbon cable goes down to the controller, this does not require changing, just unplug the flappy paddles and remove the plug with the ribbon cable, remove torx screw remove this part of steering wheel. Plug in the new buttons and then the flappy paddle wiring into the replacement buttons, it will all self explanatory when you remove the air bag.
Hope this helps, Steve :happy2:

Hi All,
First post, recent mk5 gti owner.
Happened to come across this thread after installing MFSW buttons to my Mk5 Gti dsg (2007 South African spec).
I’m running RCD360 radio with the MFSW adapter wiring.
Everything felt like it connected well as far as I could tell but after connecting the battery none of the buttons work. I haven’t taken it for a drive other than a few meters out of the garage to reset the dash lights.
Does it need to do coding or reset anything? I have vcds but unsure where to troubleshoot now
Any help would be appreciated thanks

Yes and you need to have the compatible steering control module fitted as well, as yours is a dsg it could be OK but being SA spec you can't be sure. Have you got the VCDS vag com diagnostic software?
