Intercooler seal? Front of engine bay?
« on: August 29, 2010, 05:53:04 pm »
Hey folks,

My mechanic friend changed my oil & filter and dump valve today (to a revision D).

Whilst he was under the car he said the 'seal' had gone or is leaking from the front intercooler pipe?

I had a quick look under the car to see what he meant but couldn't quite make it out?

Best way to describe it would be if your standing looking down at the engine bay it will be the FRONT of the engine drivers side, at the very bottom.

He said the seal would only be a few quid but that i'd most likely be losing power at the moment?

I thought it would just be a sillicon pipe with a jubilee clip holding it tight? Or am I missing something?

I guess if someone has ETKA it would be great to see if the part mentioned is there...

Many thanks,

Sean

The O ring on the coupler has perished. The actual O ring itself isn't visible when the coupler is in place.

Just out of curiosity, how did he confirm the seal had gone?

I suspect that he saw some oil leakage at the coupler and thought that the O ring was perished.

This is a common thing accross the whole vag range from the petrols and the dervs.  Just a poor seal between the metal coupler and the plastic intercooler ends.  Seals are a few quid and really easy to change.  I always smear a small amount of lm (or similar) grease onto the seals before refitting.  Just aids the seal.
