RNS Nav thinks its in Germany
« on: September 03, 2010, 11:59:35 pm »
Guys,

I've been using my retrofitted RNS-510 for over 8 months now.
The maps have always worked well and signal has never been an issue to obtain barring when in very remote locations or on housing estates later than the maps I was using.

I updated to the latest update around April time this year IIRC, version 26XX of the firmware to be precise as per the thread by Carl (thanks chap  :happy2: - http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,7154.0.html).

Ever since doing so the nav maps consistently seem to think they're in a town in Germany. The vehicle cursor actually moves as though I'm driving on the German roads and across rivers + through fields which is slightly concerning. If I create a new route to a location in the UK, it takes me across Europe and via ferries etc as though current position is in Germany  :scared:

The strangest thing is on Bank Hol Monday (30/08/2010 - Last Mon) I drove from Wangford in Suffolk on the East Coast all the way back to Northants, in the Midlands and on the A14 it picked up signal again successfully and showed I was on the A14 heading back West. All fine.

Tonight again however, when I drove locally, I was back in Begenherd or wherever TF it thought I was in Deutschland :sad1:

What can I do about this?
- Is there a firmware bug/defect that I could have missed?

Obviously my antenna position is fine otherwise it wouldn't pickup signal full stop rather than intermittently?

Thanks,
- Pete
Pete

Does it always start up in a place called Regensburg?

If you turn the unit on and just leave the car parked up outside, does it eventually get an accurate lock (15 minutes should be enough)

If the answers are Yes and No in that order, it sounds like something is up with the GPS antenna - if you press Map twice and select GPS from the drop box, how many satellites does it show? A fault with the GPS antenna should also show in a VCDS scan.

If the answers are Yes and Yes, then you have Regensburg Syndrome, which is caused by upgrading the firmware to a version that is too high for the hardware in your RNS-510. You will need to downgrade, probably to version 1200, but I'd need to know the actual RNS version you have (they come in A, B or C variants. I am betting you have an A but the only way to be 100% certain is to look at the label on the back of the unit)

'57 DSG GTI alas now gone, but not forgotten....
Now motorway cruising in a 61 Mondeo Titanium X Sport 2.2 TDCi. 500+ miles to a tankful and bucketloads of torque :O Ok, it's not a GTI but it's fun... and that's what counts ;)

Thanks for the prompt and informative reply Mark  :happy2:

Looks like you know your stuff :pomppomp:

When I turn the nav on and select maps, it seems to start in the town of Messerschmittstrasse (at least that's the only town on show on the map without changing zoom etc...). Could this be the same condition you mention?

I won't be able to take the fascia and dash out to get to the back of the RNS so sharpish, but I can attempt this one evening when I get time. What am I specifically looking for sorry, just the build version of the unit? - Can I tell this from the software on the RNS perhaps?

The answers to your questions 'seem' to be No & No, based on that info  I guess that doesn't really help but I think your suggestion of backdating the firmware is probably sound seeing as it didn't reproduce this symptom when I was on the older version. Can I backdate easily or is there a complicated process involved?  :scared:

Thanks.
Pete

If your secret menu is enabled, you can enable downgrading of the firmware, so it becomes as easy as upgrading it.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

You don't need to back date the firmware.

Just update to 2720 or higher. What version Satnav do you have. A or B

If it's A use this firmware (272X)

Click me

If it's B use this firmware (276X)

Click me

I have an A revision in both my Octavias and both are using 272X fine. You will still get the Regensburg Syndrome BUT it will go within a couple of secs (2 mins max although for me it's never been longer than about 10 secs)  :happy2:

Lovely SW, sounds good.

One question.... What's the secret menu sorry?!  :P

Press and hold setup for 30 secs and it will cycle through to a test menu.

It enables you to check what version maps & SW you are running and a few other bits. Not overly important just nice to have :happy2:

Thanks Carl. I've no idea tbh, but I think mine is the B or C grade if that's possible?
I'm running the version that you kindly put on the OP of the thread I referenced in my first post on here. Little bit lost as to what I need now, plus the second link above doesn't work, says it's not available  :sad1:

Depends if the test menu has been enabled though.

When I held it, it just offered me the radio frequency after 10 seconds and didn't change for the next 20 seconds, so I haven't got this  :indifferent:

^^

If it's B use this firmware (276X)

^ Tell a lie Carl, this is working now. Beginning download and I'll look to update to this tonight  :happy2:

I can live with the German problem if it corrects itself after a minute or two.

Just in case anyone was wondering, Messerschmittstraße is a road in Regensburg.

Still worried that you have a GPS antenna problem - if you see 0 satellites in the GPS viewer then I personally would suspect that first. Of course up or downgrading the firmware doesn't involved taking the dash apart and if it sorts you out then happy days  :happy2:

That would make sense regarding the road Mark, cheers!

Just burning the update Carl posted as we speak  :happy2:
Tried 2 DVDRWs now and it had a read error when in the RNS. Trying a CD-RW now.

1/11 Satellites btw Mark while on my driveway.

Nothing wrong with the GPS

If there was something wrong with the GPS it would say 0/0.

^ Cool Carl - as I thought as it worked for miles on the A14 - cheers.

Not sure why the disks keep failing asin the RNS-510 doesn't load it and produces the DVD/CD error. Burning my fourth. I'm obviously doing something wrong...
Does the .NRG file need to be a specific filename to load for this update? Not having much luck

Shouldn't do

NRG is just a Nero version if ISO.

What are you burning it with?
