Can dealers change the mileage on second hand clusters?
« on: September 11, 2010, 04:01:23 pm »
As above. My local dealer say they can transfer over the mileage. And they said they would do it for €60+vat  :happy2:

But they quoted €330+vat+exchange charge for new clocks  (vat is 13.5%)

So are they right?

The dealer tool VAS cannot change mileage however they may have a suitable tool or they may sub contract out to a 3rd party.

I said that to him but he said they transfer all the service/mileage data. They have done it on a set of second hand audi clocks...

I was under the impression that they could do this, as could Shark Performance.

Considering it's a 2 minute job (on pre 2006 clusters) I should imagine most dealers can do it.

Dealers guided VAS system doesn't let the dealer do much now has it is all done by internet connection to germany...So dealer doesn't see the SKC code or transfer of mileage

All they do it plug it in press a button and it connects the data is taken off then the cluster is swapped and the data re-booted back onto the new cluster with every thing that should be there,

I watched them do my original cluster when it got damaged accidentally on purpose  thank goodness for warranties.

I think it'd be entertaining to watch you fit a dash insert and set it up correctly in two minutes!!

Swapping over the clusters is fairly quick'n'easy. It's the coding that takes time. They'll charge for an hour's labour for the entire thing.

So if i gave them a second hand set of highline clocks, could they transfer the mileage?

So far as I am aware, and as I posted above, not with the dealer tool VAS.

Why not put them to the test, if they can do it what's the issue with how they do it??

That said, I always thought the mileage was held in 3 places, the ECU, Key and the cluster itself?

it's not an issue in this case as we aren't talking about mis-representing the mileage simply adjusting a used cluster to match the car it's being fitted to.  Everything would match.
