Turbo going on my mk5?
« on: September 08, 2010, 09:14:31 pm »
Hi there guys

My mechanics in the middle of replacing a part on my mk5 and had to check the turbo in the process, he says its going and its something to bare in mind, just wondering how much it would cost me if it does indeed go?

Thanks

Just saying "the turbo is going" seems too vague. What's happening? A drop in performance? Unfamiliar sounds?

K03 or K04? - Someone here is selling a K03.

Your Golf mk5 1.9tdi will be running a garret variable geometry turbo which tends to be a solid turbo (early 200-2005 2.0TDI 140pd tend to have major turbo issues by poping the seals)  Its is very hard to do a visual inspection on any turbo and come up with the conclusion its "going"??  There should be some play in the shaft this is normal and not a sign of a failing bearings.  The most comming fault with variable geometry turbo (VNT) is the vanes becomming sticky causing the actuation control struggle to control the boost.  The "sticky vane" issues can cause limp mode with boost deviation fault codes.   Some places will want over £900 to fix the sticking vnt, but there are a few places which can sort it out for around £90 to £150 for a vnt clean using a cleaning kit from Innotec.

the 1.9tdi mk5's turbo suffer from turbo whine from worn bearings. Often customers will describe this as a police siren type sound.

The siren symptom's deffo true - I kept checking my rear view mirror!
Best to replace it before it goes if it is on the way out.
My turbo blew and took the intercooler, cat and regulator flap with it!

Ouch £1100? I havent heard any siren noises or anything like that, around what mileage are they usually expected to go? I'll hopefully be taking her in for a service at the dealers soon, is it something they can look for during the service and check for me?

Thanks

Ive got a gttdi and I'm on my 3rd turbo. Even on sites like autocar, there saying our cars have weak
Turbos. I got my first one done at the dealers for £1500 all in. Second time I bought a reconditioned unit from eurocar parts for £480 and got a mechanic friend to fit it, also bought a new intercooler and hoses as you'll need theses aswell. They also gave my £90 quid refund when I took my old unit back. I'm afraid it's just our car having weak turbos. And like I said earlier even second hand car review sites know about this problem on the 2.0 diesels. And our sh*t turbos
