Jerky DSG

Hi , I drove my sons ED30 yesterday it seams jerky but considerably worse when hot, In reverse up our drive it was like kangarooing , Is this a common Mechatronics failure i have read about ??


I spoke to the service guy at my local VW dealer ,he said never heard of the dsg mechatronics failing on a golf gti, I explained my reasoning and what the forum fellas thought on mechatronics etc and he said that is the trouble with the internet to many so called experts. I sort off came of the phone pissed with his attitude in fact i am glad i did end the call as otherwise we would have fallen out .

He said , we can run it on the diagnostics and there will be a charge !!. The car is still only 26 months old and done 12k miles ok it will be free ,Will this find the fault if there is one ?? .

The car was owned by a middle aged lady for the first two years and 8,900 miles does it just need liberating as in a proper thrashing or dsg reset

any help would be great thanks in advance

Sounds a bit like Mech problems, a reset may help too, diagnostics from what i have read does not tend to pick up faulty mechs

The "kangarooing" effect is a well known fault that can occur with the DSG. VW know about it and in my opinion the guy on the phone at VW is obviously either ill informed or simply trying to fob you off. Running a diagnostic may not throw up any issues and if the car is under warranty and only 26 months old they should check it out for free anyway. Good old VW aftersales customer service strikes again!

By all means take it for a good run, but get it checked out as well.

As above, checks like this have always been free for me ??, very bizzare for them to want to charge !!, if you have VCDS you can reset the DSG yourself using this guide steve posted up

Try another dealer.  Once you've had your Mechatronics replaced then you can take great pride in going back to the first garage, ask to speak to the Dealer Principle and you can tell him all about why you'll never darken their doors again - Simplessssssss

My local dealer agreed to replace mine in the R after just one visit.

I had one replaced previously in my Ed30 so knew the symptoms and that was enough for my dealer.

Sounds like you have been fobbed off, which is poor from any dealer. As suggested go elsewhere.

Another way would be to mention it when it was in for a service. If it is as bad as you say then a simple drive should be enough diagnosis.

Night and Day ,just had a lovely chat with the service Manager at Caffyns Brighton ,booked in for investigation on 20th free courtesy car he has been with them 9 yrs  cool

first is dsg reset.

second mechatronics replacement .

third i like a lot will be a brand new box .

Why dont you stock them as its a common failure ????? He said as they are so complicated as things improve they will ship you a new Mechatronics part with every one of the latest updates ? , sounds well good .

He said he will get to the bottom off it and will go through the 1,2,3 if thats what it needs to fix it

Like I said above, I would re-vsit the other dealer once the job is done.  Just for my own satisfaction.

I would have said a colleague at work had the same issue with his car and it turned out to be the mechatronics unit. No need to mention the internet as they'd just dismiss you.

I would love to but they both work for the same company Caffyns group plc , they have four outlets in Sussex, the guy was so helpful unlike the other prat ,I guess he could take some stick and it wouldnt be fair as he was totally professional . tbh if i am satisfied i will give there dealer principal a call and tell him the difference between Eastbourne and Brighton and explain how i rated Steve

I left the ED30 with the garage today , they ran diagnostics and reset the box , they called and said they wasnt happy and had ordered a mechatronics unit that will be here ready to fit in 3 weeks  . very pompt and efficient service



New mechatronics   the first lasted 12,500 miles how long will this part be covered for is it just till the three years is up or will this be covered for 24 months

Nice one.

The replacement part will carry a minimum 1 year warranty and should be covered until the expiry of the warranty I think.
