RCD-510
« on: January 27, 2009, 08:44:13 pm »
Anyone have one fitted to a mk5?  I'm thinking of buying one to replace my RCD-500 which must hail from the 90's as it's never heard of mp3's   I have read the many threads praising the RNS-510 but I don't need the nav and it (along with the hard disk and DVD capability) is a £400 premium over its little brother.  Then again, maybe I would re-coup the difference when I come to sell the car?

RCD-510 is a very good unit and if your happy to go without the Nav, Hard Drive and DVD playback support then it's a good upgrade from the old RCD-500.  :happy2:

Cheers Steve,

I've seen 2 different part numbers for the RCD-510:

3C8  035 195
1K0 035 195 AA

Anyone know why and would both work in the mk5?

1K0 is the one you want for the Golf.
3C looks like it might be either Skoda or Seat?

^^^

Thats good cause I just won one on ebay with the "1K0..." part number!

Anyone know what aerial adaptors I will need for fitting?

Also will any VAG-COM programming be required when I swap out the RCD-500 for the RCD-510?  I have the VW sound pack with amplifier & 10 speakers if that makes any difference.

Pics to follow!

Dunno about connectors, but if it's the same as the RNS-510 the two seperate FAKRA hoods have been put together into a single FAKRA hood which requires a new mating half (can't recall part # right now).
As you have the sound pack you may need a bit of VCDS work.

Sorry to hijack your thread, anyone fitted one of these units to a car fitted with the VW Soundpack?
Cheers,

Wayne

3C is the Passat Chassis not Skoda or SEAT.

If you have soundpack then I would think coding is required.

How will I know if the sound pack needs coding?  Will no sound come out of the speakers?

And when I take it to my local VW dealer what do i need to ask for?  Will they understand if I say "my soundpack needs coding to work with the new radio"?

BTW as regards aerial adaptors I bought the following one from ebay, think it should be what I need:

VW should be able to code it for you without you needing to give them precise instructions.

My RCD-510 turned up yesterday but appears to be faulty :(

When I press the load/eject button, then select a slot (1-6) it just displays an error message after a short delay:

I can't hear the mechanism moving to load the cd and the slot remains closed.  I read that there are 2 ground wires in the wiring harness that need swapped (cd gnd + aux gnd) which I haven't done, could that be the cause?

Any other ideas before I return the unit for a refund?

My CD-changer worked without swapping the ground pins with my RNS-510, although the sound was really really awful. I swapped the ground and sound was good. I'm not sure if the RCD-510 is the same but the CD-GND/AUX-GND pins need to be swapped on the harness. Get a really really tiny flathead screwdriver and try it out.
Otherwise you might need to recode it? Don't think so but it's a thoguht.

Had to send it back for a refund/exchange.  I really hope I can get another as I really liked it.
