Yup I'd always plump for an ex-lease/company car over privately owned as you know 100% it will have wanted for nothing as it will not have been at the drivers expense!  

Not wanting to burst your bubble mate, but I used to organise the lease car scheme at my last job and this is FAR from the thruth 
The cars were very badly maintained and were always repaired (most had a knock or two in their time!) at the cheapest back street garages. This was using probably the biggest and best known leasing company in the UK as well. I'm not naming names, here so don't ask.

In addtion to this, my GTI is an ex lease car as well. It has 1 previous owener (the lease company) and the car was in a shocking state when I bought it. I AM willing to name names here... 'JCT600 contracts ltd'. The car did have a full service history but also a torn leather seat, very poorly resprayed panels, deeply scratched side window, deformed tyres, non-standard headlights plus loads of bits and bobs that were scratched or marked. It also broke down 2 days after I bought it too!
It's all sorted now as I haggled a lot off the asking price then fixed it at my expense, but I won't be buying another lease car again in a hurry.

Youv'e not burst my bubble as that is your experiance and not mine. I was a Fleet Manager for 10 years for a bluechip company and our cars were maintaned to the highest of standards! If you have heard of 'Duty of Care' and 'Corporate Manslaughter' you will realise no Fleet Manager worth his salt would ever allow a fleet to be ran in the way you describe as not only is his career at risk but also his freedom!!

Yes you may get the odd Company Car Driver who treated his car like a dustbin but as far as I was concerned this would have been dealt with at Line Manager level with HR involvement if required. All cars were always serviced and MOT'd up to date before return and any remarketing work carried out first. If none of this were done we were liable for any repairs and would have been charged directly by the owner (the leasing company).

No worries guys! I'm not fussed, as I've just taken it to my specialist and we looked over the entire car and he has confirmed that it's in immaculate condition. No signs ever of it being in even a minor knock. Engine all scanned and road tested and everything is spot on! Mine had all the servicing done by BMW main dealers and I phoned them and asked about the work that was undertaken, any faults/advisories etc etc. Everything checked out! So this M3 was definitely not like the cars Garth mentions!

I have had leased cars for the last 13 years and all were maintained to the highest standard (ie main dealer). If any part of the car had the slightest of issues I had/have it sorted asap, no questions, whether it be warranty or lease covered (may as well if it's covered and cost free..  ) NEVER in 13 years have ANY of my cars been to a back street garage.  
Regarding the general condition of the car (ie paint work and interior), that it purely down to the driver and his standards with regards to how much he cares about the car. IMO cars like a M3 or GTI would, in most cases, be a lot better looked after than say a fleet Astra diesel etc. Unless of course you're the 60 year old bloke who had mine for 15 months..

On the lease side of things it can be hit and miss, seems like youve found a good example. I think you can select maintained or not as my dads has always been main dealer serviced and kept in tip top shape, pushing on 90k and drives like new as it should with modern cars.
