not the engine running on,but the Fan blades taken a beating...
« on: September 08, 2010, 05:47:56 pm »
This is a wierd one.
I bought my ED30 in October, with 16500 on the clock and now,Ive just gone over 17500.
I took the car for an,erm, vigorous :innocent:, drive the other day(the first since I've owned it) and now it's doing something a bit odd.
After it had it's drive,I noticed that at idle,it was slightly different-like a more noticeable vibration,as if it was running mildly out of timing- but there were no indications showing on the dash or the MFD of anything untoward. The idle was stable, not fluctuating at all.Gave it a couple of blips on the throttle and the vibration disappeared.
I then shut it down breifly-about 5 minutes- outside the house and then had to go back out.Took the car ten minutes down the road, parked up,switched the ignition off, took out the key and noticed it seemed to be running on! :scared:
This kind of faded away after 10 or so seconds, but it was a bit scary.
I thought it was just a glitch in the ECU after the thr...vigorous drive, but it did it again today.
The nearest I can describe it as,was that, probably for the first time in it's life, I've driven it like it was on a racetrack, and I've frightened it and made it tremble slightly!
Any ideas what might be causing it before I book it into the garage to get it checked over?

I'm sure somebody on here mentioned a reason for this recently but I can't find the thread? If I remember right it was something to do with either a fuel or air leak?

If the turbo is hot after a vigorous drive and the engine is shut off then the water pump will run on to cool the turbo down this could result in seeming like the engine is running on, although it wouldnt account for the rough running, although that could be the secondary cooling fan being a little un-balanced????

Thanks mate,I think what your saying could be the cause.
After a bit of investigation, the sound I hear are the fans running on a bit after shutting the engine down. The thing about the secondary fan sounds plausible, but I've since found that if I give the engine a rev to around 2.5k and hold it then let it fall back to idle, the vibration disappears.
It isn't affecting the cars running, nor is there any warning lights or displays coming on in the dash,so apart from being a little bit annoying,I'll just wait and see if the service next month brings anything to light.

Found out what the cause is.
Sat idling today after a 12 mile run and turned on the blower....then the vibration started...switched off the climate control and a few seconds later things went back to normal....got an idea now that it's definately the cooling fans causing it. :happy2:

Anyone know the price of a fan assembly?  :sad1:
The fan on the right side has an eight inch gap in the ring and the other one has a small notch taken out of one of the blades.Looks like errant stone damage....lucky the fans copped it before it could do serious damage to the rad
