Anyone had a windscreen replacement
« on: September 19, 2010, 02:14:36 pm »
Think its time my car had a new screen, its got a large repaired chip at the bottom passenger side and the whole wiper arc are is scratched, probably due to the last owner not replacing blades occationally.

apart from the screen itself is there anything else that needs to be changed or that gets damaged when removed.

use Autoglass if you can....had mine changed 3 or 4 times. AG everytime. Just make sure the guy u get assigned knows how to remove the rear view mirror easily housing the rain/dusk sensor.

Otherwise its a straight forward cut out of the bonded screen and rebond.

unless they can repair the chip without need to replace whole screen.

I was weary about the technician re using the plastic trims on the sides of my Cupras windscreen.

He assured me they go back in fine and they did  :happy2:

Cant remember if it was auto glass or auto windscreens. One of the 2 wanted over £700 !  :fighting:

£700?

Windscreen replacement is covered on pretty much all FC insurance policies..normally just pay excess of £50-£60.

Unless you didn't have FC cover with windscreen.

After I had a chave put his boot through my windscreen last month Insurance put me through with Autoglass, £90, and they made sure they were putting in the correct colour tinted window, phoned up to say he was free 4 hours earlier than scheduled, and did a very very tidy job!

I have Fully comp cover with  glass cover but my underwriter is based in germany and complicated the process.  So I had to pay upfront and claim it back from my insurer.

Guys, if you have had an Autoglass replacement screen and it is not OEM can you post what make it is. I have my screen replaced 3 weeks ago and I am not happy with it, the gap between the top of the glass and frame is about 8mm, leaving a channel for water to stand. Be interesting to hear from others who have had a replacement screen. I will post a picture to show what I mean when I get home from work tonight.

As above I was very happy with the job.

I had one new screen replaced cos it was leaking. Well it left a puddle of water in the gear gaiter overnight. Cracking service tho they came out 2 hours after I called for instant replacement with another new screen. Applied extra glue too to make sure it was all sealed and bonded properly. Couldn't fault them.

Always replace with an OEM version for a few reasons...

1) Perfect fit and if not there is comeback from the fitting company as OEM glass should fit perfectly.
2) Resale value of the car is maintained as the glass is still marked as VW glass instead of another company (At least in the case of the golf)

Being the primary reason, IMOO.

Thing is though pretty much everyone has had to replace a windscreen because of a stone chip or the like at some point so it certainly wouldn't put me off if a car didn't have the OEM glass.

Insurance co's often charge a hefty premium if you don't use their appointed windscreen agent.  Given the quantity they have to do they wouldn't be in business long if they or their glass was below par.

OEM is nice to have if your insurer doesn't sting you though...

Get a genuine screen and insist they supply you with one! cause if you dont you wont get one. make sure the tech bonds it properly cause i can happily show you what happens when autoglass dont bond a screen correctly and it rains....bye bye gateway! i had a serious argument with Autoglass and apart from a new screen and rain sensor that i got fitted FOC i also told them to supply me a new gateway and i installed/ coded it and billed them for my time, oh and i forgot they marked my steering wheel so they had to replace that as well.....shocking! so basically it depends on the techician you get! VW HQ are another comany who give shockingly poor quality of service, rant over!
