Snapped suspension springs... anyone had this?
« on: September 20, 2010, 02:08:34 pm »
Following on from this thread: http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,19459.0.html

Both my front springs have snapped and so I need new ones. Has anyone else heard of this on a mk5? I know E46 beemers had a lot snap on the rear but never heard of it on a Golf.  :scared:

Yep, had that on my E46 Coupe, but never heard of it on a Golf.

I'd see it as an opportunity to lower, if you haven't already :happy2:

I wonder if the bad road repairs after the bad winter have had anything to do with it ?. I've found what seems loads of broken spring parts by the side of the roads near me lately?.

maybe for the majority, but my car has been making creaking and clunking noises since last summer when I bought it! I thought the noises were a noisy steering rack and clunking subframe but apparently it's down to the snapped springs. I can't belive VW Leeds didn't spot 2 broken springs when it last went in to them

Pretty sure i've read a couple of people have this in the How to section or one of those sections.
Ideally any suspension parts should be replaced in pairs - ie dont jsut do front left for example, do both front items.

I guess this would be less applicable to an almost new car, but would be more important as time goes by otherwise handling could be impacted in a dangerous way

Garth, what was the sympton of the broken spring?  clunking over slow bumps? occasional feeling of loss of dampening?

I ask as something has been worrying me on near side front, but havent had chance to get it checked out, I have had an MOT in this time would a normal MOT be likely to pick up on this sort of issue?

My father in law is a mechanic - broken springs are very common. So much so he bought a hyraulic spring clamp as he does them that often.

Mine went about 4 months ago.  Mark 5 GTI on an 05 plate (40,000 miles on the clock), nsf only.  It was under VW warranty thanfully so was replaced.  Pushed them to do the other side but they wanted to charge me £250.  According to them the manufacturers do not recommend replacing both, but obviously to save themselves some cost and labour.

Had my GTI a year now and can safely say it's the most unreliable car I have ever owned.  Fuel injectors replaced after 4 weeks, rattly interior, snapped spring, dodgy rear parking sensors and now the rear wiper keeps sticking.  Last time I buy from a VW main dealer, their service has been appaling under the VW warranty and they basically counldn't give a sh!t after you have purchased the car.  Shame as I love the car, way it looks, performance, drive and what is stands for!
