AMD remap DONE!!!
« on: September 21, 2010, 10:36:22 pm »
Well guys, was at AMD today and had the AMD map but customised with a very strong bottom end spike.  So the car is extremely aggressive low down, which was what I wanted.  The sound coming out of the turbo back (resonated) is nothing short of orgasmic .  Now comes the interesting thing.........it was quite warm today (about 22 degrees celcius) and the rolling road recorded 240.2 bhp with 264.5 lb/ft @ 3094 Rpm after the remap but before adaptions (which apparently means it needs a few cold starts)?
What I found astounding was what they told me next.......and I would like to hear all your feedback on this.  Because the car was mapped with 95 RON, they told me I needed to go onto Shell V-Power or Tesco 99 (fair enough)   They told me though that after doing 3 tanks on the higher octane it would increase my BHP by 20-25  :surprised:  Any suggestions or knowledge on whether this is a pipe dream?  :rolleye:
If it's true I may go out tomorrow and drive to Scotland and back to get the 3 tanks out the way  :signLOL:

In terms of noticing better mpg, and a potentially smoother drive, yes without doubt V-Power or Tesco 99.

In fact, they should be the only 2 fuels you put into your car, as the usual super unleadeds are 97 RON and not 98 which is what the FSI runs best on.

In terms of 20-25bhp...

Although it will run a lot nicer with the remap when you use proper fuel as mentioned above - just don't expect massive, if any, bhp gains from it :happy2:

Mmmm, interesting, and I would have been inclined to agree with you, but they did tell me to expect 20-25 BHP down on the rolling road prior to the remap when I told them I was running 95 RON.  Just googled a bit and apparently on 5th gear they did a test on a scooby with 95 RON then 99 and it increased the BHP by 30????  There must be some truth...........either way I'm not too bothered because the car is pulling ridiculously, and the extra BHP may cause less traction...

I notice a big difference on the eddy between 95 ron and vpower 20 bhp extra wouldnt be surprizing tbh. (im running stage 1 bluefin)

Who did you speak to today at AmD?

you'll definitly gain power by using higher grade fuel but you wont be making an extra 25hp extra with vpower.  My car used to run like a bag of spanners on 95 ron,

the figures you have got are bang on stage 1 figures as well.  the only stage 1 car i have seen make 260hp had a fuel pump and intake fitted.

mine made 240hp @ 5500rpm then plateau'd with heat soak.  my graph is in the dyno thread on here if you want to compare

They are a good bunch at AMD, it's also handy having Lakeside across the road for a look round the shops

Generally speaking, the MK5 Golf GTI gets to around (realistically) 235-245bhp from a remap, with no other mods.

Perhaps with a cat-back exhaust system, you'd free up a couple more bhp, a full system, a couple more.

But if they are saying 20bhp+ from changing fuel, thats essentially them saying that in total, your remap would take you to ~260bhp

Does seem a little 'over quoted' in my opinion, but that said, turbo cars are so different, im sure some of these GTI's came out the factory pushing more than the quoted bhp...

Upgrading the fuel won't give you more power so much as return it. Stock GTI is meant to be 200bhp but you will get this only with 98+RON. Use lower grade fuel and the car holds back, produces less power and lower mpgs. There is no excuse as to why you should be using lower-grade fuel.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

I have recently(31/08/10) had an AMD stage 2 map done on my 2006 mk5 GTI DSG which is fitted with Milltek TBE and Pipercross panel filter. It made 280 bhp on their rollers before heatsink. I have always used Vpower which make a huge difference to how the car runs and goes. On AMD stage 1 with std exhaust system and Pipercross panel filter and running on Vpower it made 257 bhp.

Does that mean if you use BP102 you would get an extra 40-50 bhp  :signLOL:

Yes there is... Cost!
When you drive 800 miles a week like me, the extra for VPower adds up to a lot of money each month. On my 8L S3 I ran VPower religiously for a year, then dropped back to 95 ron and didn't notice any difference at all in terms of power or eceonomy. For this reason, I have never gone back to it on any car since.

EDIT... My GTI is standard so it's obviously not relying on hi performance fuel.

I was told of by VW for using 95 ron in my tank, it could invalidate my warranty if anything happened to my engine or associated parts they advised. In fairness all times this has happened its because the filling station didn't have super unleaded.

No offence, but if you're concerned about mileage/fuel costs, why the hell are you driving a petrol-hungry GTI? Why not either swap for a diesel-engined car? Even a GT170 would give you around 47mpg and you'd get similar performance to a GTI.

How much difference did you get in mpg from switching down from V-power to 95-RON?

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

It's not a petrol hungry car. I get the same economy from my GTI than I used to get from my A3 TDI 170 Quattro. The engine is the A3 was awful and it kept breaking down. That was brand new as well.
I said I wanted to buy the car than was the quickest/most fun that still returned mid 30's on the average mpg, which the GTI does. Round town the TDI actually gets worse mpg than the GTI. Only on the motorway does it beat it (and only very slightly on mine)

As mentioned, economy did not change at all going down from V-Power to 95 ron. That was on an AMD remapped 260bhp S3. Before that I measured fuel economy difference on my Revo'd Ibiza Cupra for a month on V-Power with a 98 and above ron map and calculated it as being about 1mpg difference in the whole month which is not enough to warrant a change. Again I couldn't notice the difference in performance so set the map back to 95 ron map.

I'm sure there are gains to be had from using V-Power with a car properly mapped for it, but on a standard car I noticed no difference so it makes no sense to spend more money for no perfomance or eceonomy gain for me
