I guess the first thing is where are you based, as a local forum member might install it for a beer.  As you might need some coding, so VCDS cable to interface with the car.

The can gateway can be in one of two places, on older cars they are behind the ashtray on the center tunnel for the exhaust, on older cars they are up by the peddle box, they are a small module that controls the information transfer between all the computers in the car.

The issue can be that the older modules dont have the right coding to tell the third generation stereos to power down and will continue to draw power leaving you with a flat battery.  So the unit will work and if you use the car regularly enough you might be alright but if you do have issues the replacement can gateway can be bought for £70, this you will need to re-code but a local forum member should be able to help you out.

The only advantage with an RNS over and RCD is that they were introduced prior to the change in the Can gateways so with certain firmware they can run without battery drain issues, so it may actually be cheaper to buy an RNS in the short term rather than an RCD plus gateway.

Especially as it will be much easier to fit the RNS than RCD and gateway.

If your near Bromley or somewhere in the Surrey area I would be happy to help you out.

Hi mate, I'm from Nottinghamshire but would travel for help and the right unit, i'd rather pay the fuel than pay through the nose with these jokers that want a small fortune from me.

I'll start to have a gander for the better head unit then, I know there is one for sale on here but might not be able to stretch that far this month.  Sounds like it might be a plan.... really want to upgrade though think it will make the world of difference.

why will the better one work with no battery drain? What is firmware? and will it work with everything like the sat nav and stuff?

sorry to sound daft but not got a clue

Did you used to have a red Astra VXR, Daz? Your username seems familiar, think I remember you from AON.

Maybe PVS, but I think it might have been one of the 888 open days. I had one of those mapped diesels that the derv boys thought were as fast as VXRs. I wasn't one of them though! LOL

I've got an R32.

This thread caught my eye coz I've just bought an RCD510 off fleabay. I'm just gonna fit the thing and hope for the best with the battery!

I test drove the petrol GT a couple of years back, which went well. It was the 1.4 twin-charged jobby with 170PS, but I went for a Clio 197 in the end. Enjoyed having a naturally aspirated car, so the R was the only choice in a Golf unless I went for a 1.6S. Sod that!

nice one pal, yeah the 1.4 gt is good for what it is, i prefer the derv though..... Nice that you've got the r32 though, very nice choice, i'd have one but too tight with the pennies these days, i did my bit for fuel shares when i had the Astra.....
