RCD 510 in a golf gt 56 plate
« on: September 29, 2010, 10:11:48 am »
Will it go straight in? Will i have the battery drain issue?

Really want ot upgrade the unit but don't want a flat battery and want it to go straight in no issues.

Cheers

What is the current spec of your car?

I have an 05 plate and the RCD510 went straight in mine with no battery drain. It may have something to do with the spec of the current audio system as most people are reporting battery drain on these cars with that head unit.

For reference, my car already had the RCD500 with VW soundpack (which might be why I don't get the issue).

Someone is selling an RNS510 at a very good price, and will include the FW downgrade to pre-battery drain issues might be worth a look as it gives you nav function over the RCD plus other features like a HDD.

This one mate, take a look ut really is the best bit of kit to change the inside of your car, and would normally be much more expensive, paid over £600 for mine back in March.....

Right i really want one of these in my car but I'm getting really realy confused with it all.

I have contacted a few companies with regards to fitment and they have said that it will fit but it needs some other elements to be sorted,

They say that i need a change of the "gateway" and code the radio, and fit that costs £300 + VAT

or

Install an "interface" to solve the battery drain issue and fit and code for £250 + VAT

All the quotes seem to be about the same.

I want one but do not want to pay through the nose......

Thanks

I bought one of these units for £300, which was a great price I felt as they were going for nearly £600 at the time. The only other thing I bought was an aerial adapter from VW which cost £15

It all slots in without problems and even an idiot could fit it themselves. IF you do experience battery drain (which I don't), then you would need to buy a new CAN gateway, which again is easy to replace and costs about £70.

Anyone wanting to charge more than £50 for an install is taking the piss!

CAN gateway should be under the dashboard (drivers side) on your car. Do a search on here as someone posted a how to for this.

My RCD510 needed coding as I have the VW soundpack but other than that, you can probably get away with not coding anything at all assuming there are no additional components required and you have the keycode number for teh new head unit.
