DSG - idiots guide
« on: September 30, 2010, 11:56:46 pm »
Hi, guys. DSG gear box. Having never had one before, is it a must?

The VW DSG box, i basically an auto box, am I correct?

You have the padel shift on the wheel so you can drop down or change as you feel fit?

Do these auto change when you hit hight revs? and down change auto matically at low?

Can someone tell me, are they really better than a manual? what are the pros and cons?

Its a manual box with a brain, not an 'automatic' gearbox.

Yes, paddle shift - this takes over when you press it, hold it down for a few secs and it reverts back to auto

red line it will upshift automatically, and downshift when revs drop.

Better .. well it depends, personally YES.

Its the convenience of a auto box when you want it but with the added benefit and fun of a manual too.

Ok - so it's basically an automaitic with padels - but the auto box will always kick it esp when you floor it?

DO ALL DSG boxes have padels? even the diesels?

Reason I ask, looking at one now - doesn't look like a full on one. Says DSG - can't see padals :( has a big rectangle knob not like this one

The early cars equipped with DSG didn't have paddles. I guess that VW were only thinking 'automatic' :stupid:

The latest DSG's are 7-speed and dry as opposed to 6-speed and wet, and Audi's version is exactly the same but called 'S-tronic'.

Personally, I don't know of anyone who has had DSG clutches fail unless their car is highly modified with too much torque.

Right, just found out it's a 2005DSG no padals -(6 speed I think)

Is it £££ to have padals fitted?

....It's spelt "paddles".

Do a forum Search and you should find plenty info on swapping to a MFSW (Multi Function Steering Wheel) with integrated paddles.

They're both lefthand drive cars in the pics.

You can buy aftermarket cosmetic gate cover plates, mostly carbonfibre available.

Here's mine:
