URGENT HELP NEEDED - Bonnet wont close
« on: October 03, 2010, 08:38:11 pm »
Just checked the oil and the bonnet won't slam shut. (it rests like it was just popped from inside).

The dealer changed the pull mech under warranty last year and it has been really tight to open and a lot of play in the release since then.

Anayway I've got a flight to catch in the morning so need to know how to properly shut the bonnet until I get back.

Any ideas?

Wd40 in the bonnet mechanism?

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

Check that the pull handle inside the car is pushed back into the rest position.

Mine started like that and after a few goes pulling the bonnet lever it used to shut....until that is it stopped and i got angry and ending up pulling the bonnet lever to hard and snapped the lever. Changed the lever and bonnet mechanism in the end and now smooth and easy to open and shut

I've had that exact problem. I reckon you'll find that the spring mechanism in the unit mounted in the slam panel is at fault. It's actually a known issue on Mk5's and the only longterm solution is to replace the whole lock unit. Meanwhile you'll have to fiddle with a screwdriver or similar to 'spring' it. So check all your fluids, close the bonnet, and don't open it again until at your dealer with a replacement part.

A worse version of this problem is if you can't open the bonnet.

I struggle to open my bonnet, tried soaking mechanism in duck oil but no joy

Was v embarrassing when I used the lifts at my dads work to change the oil :ashamed:

I though it might be due to my ocd jetwashing habits drying out the spring :signLOL:

All I can see on the slam panel are 3 screws either side by the headlights. Where abouts are the 3 you mean?

The grill

2 hex screws on top and 2 under the reg plate you will see them if you get on your knees and peep up under the reg.

.
Hurdy managed to fiddle about with mine with a screwdriver without removing any grills etc. We were at the Nurburgring at the start of a private trackday, so mighty inconvenient and expensive if we hadn't sorted it.
