Another thing I noticed the gateway seems to perch on a bracket which can be tilted downwards very easily, they obviously didn't screw it down tight from factory. Doing that probably won't make the job any easier though

No problem!!

Just make sure you take screen shots of the current coding of the gateway including the long coding screen

Yes it just clips onto a metal bracket above the clutch peddle, make sure it is clipped on when you try to push out the gateway from the bracket.
At one point when i was doing mine i did try to pull it off completely but it attached better on the right hand side.

Matt no its an actual metal bar which is shaped at one side and flat on the other so it can be bolted to the s/rack.

The only other easy way to do it is by taking the plastic trim from either side of the steering column, basically so all the plastic trim is out. If you sit in the car and look forward of your left knee its directly behind that panel.

It makes it harder once you have hold of it cos there is no play in the harness!!!

Quick update, stripped the dash right down, taken the right hand panel off surrounding the lower part of the steering column, just need a right angled tool to take the remaining T20 screw out from near the ashtray then the left hand panel will come out easy (I hope)

Sorted, Canbus Gateway now swapped, easy when the dash panels surrounding the steering wheel are removed! Got another problem now though, I'm doing an MDI armrest install and after routing the mdi lead through, I've found it isn't long enough!   :scared:  It needs to be about 10cm longer at the very most and then It would be fine! I can't believe it's too short, I wonder if the lead was only meant to be used in conjunction with the glovebox mounted MDI instead?

I have read a post of someone getting this to work  I did think the wiring was a bit on the short side.
I finished off fitting my MDI this morning, what a pain. I took out the clove box and it has 4 electrical connection and the aircon pipe.
Got it all fitted and working now  :jumpmove:

Yes the difference with mine though is: the mdi lead isn't long enough to be able to plug the quadlock into the back of the radio as well. Bloody hopeless, I bought it from a German ebay shop, I would probably have been better making the lead myself!

it should be just about long enough are you talking about this lead:

http://www.kufatec.de/shop/product_info.php/info/p1113_c26_MEDIA-IN-MDI-Interface---Harness---VW-Golf-5.html

it should be routed down the drivers side centre console and along up through the armrest where the cd changer would normally go!

No, I bought http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=310228786869 this one from an ebay store in Germany.

I've taken it out now, I don't think I'll bother with the MDI setup and just use the SD card feature on the RCD510, much less hassle. I'm going to get a refund on the MDI loom as it is not fit for purpose.

I've got the can gateway and radio installed OK now though. The RCD510 is ace and there is a definite improvement in sound quality over the RCD300!  :congrats:

I now have a different problem though, I've recoded the CAN gateway Installation List to match the tick boxes from the old gateway but after a fault code scan it gave the following error code

01044 - Control Module Incorrectly Coded.

What have I done wrong?

Thanks

Matt
