Can bus gateway confusion
« on: October 04, 2010, 04:41:09 pm »
Hi all,

Lets see if anyone on here can clarify something for me, basically I own a 55 plate GTI, with the F revision CAN gateway. I know this needs updating to overcome the battery drain issue when I come to fit my RCD510. I've bought an 'S' revision gateway off ebay that came off an Octavia, but I'm now not sure if it's recent enough to work. (The latest version is AD methinks)

My main reason for confusion is the advice on the site below, which contradicts itself.

http://www.my-gti.com/1101/upgrading-2nd-generation-radios-rcd-300-rcd-500-to-3rd-generation-rcd-210-rcd-310-rns-310-rcd-510-power-drain-issue

As you can see, on one line it says, "The problem is the CAN bus Gateway is too old and an updated version 1k0907530 (1k0 907 530) of L revision or higher is required"

then further down on the same page, the contradiction -

Check the ‘Skoda Parts’ link (right hand menu) for a reasonably priced gateway. Revisions that will work after the 1K0 907 530 S (1K0907530S) revision include 1K0 907 530 AA (1K0907530AA), 1K0 907 530 AB (1K0907530AB) and 1K0 907 530 AC (1K0907530AC).

Now, I don't know about them, but in my alphabet, S comes after L?

Anybody used an S revision gateway and can confirm it solves the problem?

Thanks

Matt  :happy2:

VAG don't always follow alphabet convention with part numbers, so it doesn't follow that the later the letter the later the revision.

Just spent 1 hour trying to get this lil b@*tard out but no joy, I CAN see it though, in the most AWKWARD place ever, above the damn pedals, and absolutely everything is in the way, aircon ducting and everything else!! Especially when you've got big hands like me... It doesn't help either when your 6'4" trying to slot yourself into the footwell, your back ends up on the sill and it's torture after 5 minutes!   So all you lanky barstewards beware!

Oh well, I'll try again tomorrow. I think performing heart surgery would be an easier task than this!

Could do with finding myself a dwarf mechanic with spindly arms and hands to reach the can gateway

Cheers for now and thanks for the replies!

matt look on the steering column there is a black bar held in by 2 bolts, take this out and you will have better access. Personally i strip all the plastics from round the steering column when i've done them, easier than ripping your hand to bits.
By the way I have a S revision gateway and it works perfectly never had the battery drain.

Cheers

Darren

Thanks a million for the advice mate,  :happy2: I'll try your suggestion when I get in from work later. What a relief to know that the S revision works, I only payed £40 for it as well!

Darren, this black bar you're talking about, is it the ducting pipe for the footwell ventilation?

Thanks

I wonder if it could be easier got at by removing the side fusebox? Looks like an easy remove with 2 Torx screws....

LOL i just did this on Sunday, i just bought the AD version from VAG.

At one point i did get my hand stuck between the steering column and the clutch peddle but i did manage to pull out the old gateway and get the new one in.
The best way to get at it is to remove the little storage compartment and then unsrew the vent pipe as detailed earlier. It is a real hastle and i think i took about 2 hours hanging upside down...

The best part of doing this change over was having VAGCOM not managed to code the gateway....
It just came up with an error 22 code, it took me hours to work out how to sort it but i did manage to get it done.
Just need to hook up my MDI now..

Would that be the little flip down compartment nearest the door? Does this unscrew? Can you reach your arm through there to get access to the can gateway? I have tried putting my hand up through the pedals from underneath and I can touch the plug on the gateway but I can't grip it to pull it out!

Yes, the compartment just pulls off and then you can get at the screw for the vent pipe.
You don't get clear access to the gateway but it helps.
The two clip parts of the gateway are held open with a tab on the bracket taht they push into, i use a long screwdriver to bend them out of the way and then push the tabs out of the bracket. Its then one hand up between the steering column and the clutch peedle + the screw driver in the free hand to release the multiplug from the gateway. Use the screwdriver to push in the locking tab on the multiplug. It is a real pain to do but not impossible. A good tip is have a good light source to see what you are doing, i had a large maglite which didn't always help. I really needed 2 pairs of hands.

Thankyou SOOO much for the advice,  :notworthy: I will try again tomorrow and let you know how I get on. Yes it definitely seems like a job where 4 hands are needed! I've just thought it is probably an easier job with the DSG model as you only have 2 pedals so more space to work!

Cheers
