Anyone had this problem before?
« on: October 05, 2010, 10:43:19 am »
I don't drive on the motorway very often, but when I do, I notice that when I'm going along at about 70-80 if I turn the steering wheel slightly to the right (eg if road curves round) I get this vibrating/rubbing noise, I can just about feel it under my foot but not really through the steering wheel. It feels as though I'm driving on the painted line but I know that I'm not.

At first I thought the tyre or something might have been rubbing against something else. I've taken it to the dealers twice but they can't find anything wrong. They said they checked around the suspension and wheels and everything looked ok. The tech said my rear brake pads were wearing low and it could be that- couldn't quite see the connection myself  but I changed the brake pads anyway because they needed changing. Needless to say, it didn't help in any way.

Just wondering if anybody else has had this problem before?

What Tyre pressures are you running Mandy in your Vredds??

I was told by a vredestein dealer to inflate to 40 psi, see if it makes it worse on feel any difference if your running less pressure then that.

Tyres are directionals, silly question, the tyres are fitted the correct way around?

I'm not sure what the tyre pressures are on, I will have to ask my bf to check for me. I don't think that would make a difference though, like I said I only get the vibrating noise when steering slightly right, but not left.

I should hope the tyres are on the right way round , I will double check that anyway...

Paid a visit to VW yesterday and had a test drive with the technician to show him the funny noise when steering right and my steering wheel seems to make a clicking/clunking noise when turning round sharp corners (almost full lock).

(Taken the car in on a previous occasion before for this problem and they changed the top mount and road spring on the passenger side. This didn't solve the problem though.)

Whilst waiting outside for the tech, my boyfriend was inside getting something from the parts desk, they must not have realised he was with me and he overheard the tech moaning to the other  VW guy because I was bringing the car in again for the same problem. He said something along the lines of "... what else does she want us to do, we've already replaced the top mounts and springs...". I thought he was being sarcastic when he said "you love your car, don't you?"  :stupid:

Anyway, he has heard the noise now and my car is booked in for next week but I still don't think he knows what the problem is 100%.  :scared:

Why shouldn't we love our cars. If it wasn't for us he wouldn't have a job!

"Simple, she wants you to fix it you muppet" would have been my responce. People have no right to speak about customers like this IMO  :fighting: I recently had pretty much the same problem witha dealer and they have basically told me the car is fine when it blatently isn't. I can't offer any advice but hope you get it sorted

Thanks, I hope it gets sorted too... for their sake, otherwise I'm just going to keep taking it back again and again...  :signLOL:

Yes the car's still under warranty til early January so not ages. I just didn't like their attitude, you'd think they'd be happy to have the work, it's not like they don't get paid for doing it. I don't know whether to say something and not use them again or just be civil with them. Thing is they are only literally 2 mins down the road from me and the next closest dealer is about 10 miles away.

I did mention to him that it could possibly be the steering rack or something but he seemed so sure it wouldn't be that, he suggested maybe the gearbox mount is loose or something . It will be interesting to hear his findings as I'm certain that it is to do with the steering.

Of course he wouldn't agree with what you say.... your a girl and hes a guy.... and he knows way more about cars than you....

Most dealers are idiots... the people on the shop floor wouldnt know a glow plug from a spark plug.

Keep taking it back.... and back.... and back again if thats what it takes.

maxitrol is spot on , cv joint or steering rack would be my bets  :happy2:
key point is to make sure you get it sorted before the warranty runs out as a rack is expensive!
