MPG?
« on: October 06, 2010, 11:23:58 am »
I was just wondering what you guys think you realistically get from a full tank of fuel?

I have not been able to monitor a whole tank yet as my girlfriend keeps topping her up, which is nice of her but ruins my experiment, and she (the car not my girlfriend) is only two weeks old.

On average I get 27mpg whilst doing the speed limit (plus tax) so I am expecting to get around 300 miles from a tank, is this correct? Completely un-modded DSG GTI?

I apologise if this thread has been done before but I am still new to this site and getting to grips with it.

Hi fella..

I have just completed my first long trip in my manual GTI (370 miles each way) and was pretty impressed with the MPG.  The computer showed upto 38mpg at constant motorway driving at a speed of inbetween 75-85 mph. I easily completed the trip on a full tank and the computer was showing 60 miles remaining on our arrival  :happy2: All in all I reakon we were good for at least 410 miles to a full tank which works out just a shade below 34mpg which I think is really good for a 200bhp petrol motor

General around town driving i get mid to high 20's - thats mainly short trips and traffic etc in 30mph zones.
Over longer distances with motorway driving i get mid to high 30's at sensible cruising speeds but even a more spirited run on the motorways gives me at least low 30's mpg so it sounds like your guesstimate is about right

Same.  Its a very jekyl and hyde engine mpg wise.  If your easy on the throttle, no sudden acceleration etc, and cruise then its suprisingly economical.  If you're on and off the throttle a lot it will drink.

On my daily commute, 10 miles each way, and other general pottering about I will get just over 300 miles to a tank. On a long motorway trip 400 in achievable but take concentration.

Driving like a granny on a 100-mile run, through average-speed cameras, I once saw 41.7mpg. It's boring a fcuk, though. I'm lucky, our other car is a derv, so the GTI is for fun.

My current long-term average over about 3 months (2.5k miles) is 29.6 - I checked this morning!

I do mainly short, cold, urban trips during the week and longer... erm... 'spirited' runs at the weekend and I reckon I get about 330 to a tank, but I've never actually tried the whole tank experiment. I get bored easily.

On a sidenote, I've tried V-Power fuel and Tesco 99 and my car seems to run nicer - and more economical! - on the Tesco brew... not to mention the clubcard points.

Personal worst, or best - depends on perspective! - was on a hoon round Skye and I clocked 16.7mpg over two complete tankfulls in June... At £1.35 a litre it was painful. Fun, though.

Agreed, but with an extra 50 bhp and 200cc thats to be expected and the difference, I found, was pretty small.

I disagree. My Mk4 was stage one remapped to 210bhp and I could easily get 38-39 with normal off boost driving, I struggle to get 33 doing exactly the same style of driving in my mk5 gti.

To be honest I think there might be something wrong - if your journey is long enough to let the engine warm up and its just as you say normal off boost cruising 33 is definately at the low end.

If you're talking about urban driving then yeah 33 is at the top end.

Hmm... that's got me thinking now. No fault codes appeared when I vag-com'd it. I wonder if PCV is worth replacing? Or is there other possibilities? I run 99 octane all the time as well so it isn't the fuel. Oh and my journey is 13-14 miles, it gets up to temp way before that as well.
