MDI and RNS510
« on: October 06, 2010, 02:07:57 pm »
Earlier this year I bought a 2005 Gti which had an MFD2 satnav, armrest cd changer and hi-line display. The car is DSG, but didn't have a MFSW or paddles.

I have had fitted an RNS 510(version C on 2600 I think) and a Mk6 MFSW. I needed a later can gateway to prevent battery problems, and a mk6 cc lever to complete this update, although I can't change tracks/radio stations on the wheel. I'm not sure if this is possible!

The sound quality from the cd changer is now awful, and whilst I believe there is a fix for this, I decided to go the iPhone route as I can also record radio programmes to listen to in the car ( a bit like a cheap version of DAB )

I've just bought an armrest MDI unit off Ebay and an iPod cable. What I would like to know is whether the existing cable from the RNS will work with the MDI or will I have to get a new one.

I have searched the forum, but can't find a definitive answer. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. :drinking:

Did you not get a wiring harness with the MDI?

No I didn't. The Ebay ad suggested that it was a straight swap for the CD changer to use with an RNS510, but as mine is pre 510 (although I have put one in)  then I am assuming the loom is different. That's why I am hoping to find someone who has done the same mods. :happy2:

Nope it won't work, the pin outs are different as is the connector on the armrest end of the cable.

OK here we have the business end of the MDI harness

Starting anti clock wise the black 2 pin plug is power from the car.
White 2 pin plug is canbus from the car.
The next 2 are the loop through for the canbus to the head unit. ( RNS510 or RCD510)
The next 2 beside the single black connector are the power to the head unit.
The single black connector is an earth connection.
The next 3 wires going into the black connector is the connection to the 3.5mm Aux socket
The last three are the input to the head unit.

Hi

Thanks for help so far.

So if I get one of theses harness's will it all work with my RNS510, can gateway and the MDI unit in the armrest?

In other words, are all the connections for the plugs shown in the pic already there, or is my car's loom under the dash different?  And if it is all there, where can I buy the MDI harness as shown, VW, Ebay,  Kufatec?

Cheers

Hi, thanks for the link, that looks like the right one. Please can you tell me what year your Golf is, mine is 2005 and whilst I have upgraded the can gateway, I am not sure whether all the connections I need as shown in the photo are in the car's wiring loom behind the head unit. If it is then it all looks good for a weekend fitting if I can get it in time. :jumpmove:

Cheers

That cable is all you need mate - it plugs into the stereo harness and then into the stereo and has the run off harness for the MDI with more than enough cable to reach your armrest. I bought the MDI for the glovebox as I don't have an armrest so I have the eatra cable reeled up behind the air con controls.
