You've totally conveyed the feeling of flight. If you could manage to get continuity of commissions I reckon you could easily be a pro photographer. A good agent would cream off at least 25% but 75% of something is better than 100% of nothing. I guess that it's still very competitive as it was when I worked as a Designer/Art Director. Also, financial investment in the gear can be expensive, especially if studio work, though you can hire studios, assistants, etc.
On the other hand, there's a lot to be said for shooting what
you want rather than what a paying client wants.
