Silver ashtray fitting guide
I know there's a guide about, but i thought we would have a Mk5GolfGTi forum version :happy2:
The part (1K0857351D44U @ £25.54 + VAT )
Firstly put the car in 4th gear, then use a tool to remove the gear selector surround by putting the tool at the top of the piece and apply gentle pressure to remove the surround (see clips in the picture).
Then undo the two screws as in picture (be carefull not to drop them into the void !)
Then undo the 3 plugs (equpment specific, so you may have more or less plugs), lastly theres a little plastic plug that holds the loom to the ashtray bottom, use pliers to pop this off.
Then the ashtray will just slide backwards out of the hole (this is why you need to select 4th gear to allow its removal)
you then us a fine flat screwdriver or trim tool to pop the front of the ashtray, you will notice the two clips, be carefull not to scratch the trim.
Now the hard bit, at the back of the ashtray is two more clips but there much harder to reach as there enclosed in the base, you will need to access the clips from two holes in the bottom, when they are popped of theres just two little clips in the middle of the lid and gentle force should remove these.
Now the lid is off you just need to clip the new unit on and reverse the procedure, then stand back and enjoy your work.

Nice one Shaun :happy2:
I did mine (twice, once in the GTI nad once again in the ED30) in situ! A bit fiddley but as you say the rear one's are a real sh$t and are equally as tricky when you try and put the silver one on :ashamed:

One thing to watch out for. The metal clips in picture No 6. that hold the switches in. I was pushing the conector back in when I had finished the job and it shot out and dropped into the transmission tunnel
It was a bitch of a job to fish it out. Had to use a piece of dowel with blue-tac on the end to reach it!!!!! and that was after it took me ages to find the little bi*ch.
Nice guide though. :happy2:
