Great guide and cool mod. 182 you showed an alternative ash tray cover but the pic won't show. Is this with the brushed alu surround as well as the ash tray cover? If so have you got another pic/ part no./ price??

What else has been ditched over the years?

Brush alu try looks great - OE I presume?

Its been a long time since i saw the post but off the top of my head

The metal tray as pictures
10 speaker changed to 8
aerial in rear window back to roof aerial
Blue window tints for gti and r32 were dropped for green tints as all other vw's have in 2007 some time
They stopped putting rubber seals around the rear windows on 3 door in 2007 which leaves them looking a little unfinished

I'll update if i remember any more

The auto dim on the passenger side wing mirror was apparently dropped too, has to be some advantages to having an older GTi  :happy2:

Yep, I got a very very early model so got all the nice stuff.

IIRC the metal foot pedals/metal dash trim were replaced with brush-ally-effect-plastic trims as well on late model GTIs.

Looks great, I love mine, hate the vw cost cutting exercise.  The black plastic lid looks very cheap in comparison

did yours come with it ?

The first 12 months of GTI's all had them, as well as 10 speakers, aerial in the rear window and a number of other things that have been removed each year.
........mine has all of these  :happy2: .

Didn't even realise mine had what you mention.
Knew about the alu cover though, can't miss it.
Seen some in CF can't work out if I prefer them.
No Golf anymore.
Enjoyed the last five years of ownership of Mk5 & 6 GTIs.
Plus an excellent forum for knowledge and new ways to deplete the bank account.
Thank You Everyone.

The part number is in the fitting guide below. The price has gone up to £30 plus some pence. i ordered mine today, although it not in stock and will have to wait for VW to bring them in from Germany.

Btw I saw one in an 05 GTi yesterday when parked and it looked nicer in real life than in the photos hence the immediate order...

@ 182 Blue;

Got my cover today and its a slighty different shade (lighter) to the trim on the doors and dash, not really noticable due to the position of the cover when fitted. Just wondering if yours was the same?
