I don't know about the rest of the country, but the weather has been sublime here in the Northwest, the last two days.  

So i made the most of it, and went with the family to Arley gardens.

This was my first trip out were i had lots of photo opportunities with the new camera, and my lesson for the day was to just try and learn about depth of field, and try and get nice bokeh in the background of the images. If your a butch kinda person you wont like these.  













On my large screen mac its easy to see, but not to clear on here, but this butterfly has only been a butterfly for a very short time, his wings are not properly formed and if you look closely you can still see he has a very hairy back. ( Similar to mine ).





Some quite rare magic mushrooms.    Led Zep made these famous.







        Onto my favourite pics of the day.

These have only been cropped, the strange light and fairy like atmosphere was natural, and the light shining through the translucent petals made them glow like tree lights.

Thanks robin.    I bought a new fast lens to play with, the aperture opens up to F 1.4. which makes focusing interesting to say the least. If you look at this pic you can clearly see how narrow the depth of field is wide open.



On this pic of my son His right eye is in focus but his left eye is not. And its only a few mil further back into the pic.

I have a Canon 550d. And there is a feature on the camera that shows you depth of field, but it's strange and hard to use for a newbie like me. When you press the dof button the part of the image in focus, gets shaded when looking through the view finder but not for me yet.  I either get no shading or cant see a thing.

Hmm, I think I'd prefer it the other way around: So the soft-focus area is previewed as shaded, if it has to be shaded at all. On the old SLR non-digital cams you could press a button and preview the focus as you would see in the final shot because the button would mechanically open the lens to the widest aperture (lowest value f#) you have selected. I assume you don't have to always view any focus shading.

You'll find that in time you won't have to think too hard about it (anything not to over-exercise the peanut, eh?) because you'll become very familiar with the effect which a particular aperture setting will give you according to the lens. It's a bit like knowing instinctively which gear you are in (on the car, not which clothes you're wearing!).

The wider the lens angle, the greater the depth of focus field. So a telephoto lens usually has a much shallower dof.

Don't know why but that first pic of white flowers is definitely my fave.

Some very nice shots dude. Wish I had the time and money to get back into photography. I keep lusting after a nikon SLR. Used to love messing around with my dad's old SLR and learning about concepts like aperture etc.

RE: DOF button!

When you press it... if stops the lens down to what ever F number you have selected, thus reducing the amount of light allowed into the camera (look thru the lens whilst pressing it) which is why the view finder goes darker if youve selected a high f number.

....For about £60 a year you get free parking on all NT sites and free entry to many places of interest throughout the UK. Not my scene but a very good deal.
