iPhone Satnav and heads up display - plus short list of apps
« on: October 12, 2010, 08:55:30 pm »
What are my options for sat nav software on the iPhone and what's recommended?

Also, I seem to recollect there was a handy app which gave a summary of speed, etc. in the car like a heads up display.  Couldn't find it from the search on the forum.  Anyone know what it is?

P.S.  Open for members to short-list useful iPhone apps here.

Thanks in advance.  :happy2:

As far as Sat Nav goes I believe Tom Tom have released a full app but it costs around £50.00. There's always google maps not quite the same I know. :)

I've always been a TomTom user, but I have an RNS 510 in the Golf.

However, I have Co-Pilot on my iPhone which is just as good, some say better, but is much cheaper, currently only £19.99. :jumpmove:

Was interested in a free one as a fall back option when in another car...as I have RNS 510 in the car.

What about the HUD display app, any ideas?

I use TomTom on my iphone. I find it much better then the standalone versions. My old standalone TomTom took a good 5 mins to get its first signal - iPhone is literally 2-3 seconds! Its always spot on with its tracking etc. Love it.

I did use HUD display for a while, but didnt really like it TBH. Its supposed to have a compass, which shows the direction of the nearest speed cameras etc - but I found it rubbish. The compass didnt move around very fluid and was too unreliable. It may have been updated since then, but I took it off and never looked back TBH.

The missus has been telling me how good a free app called navfree uk and ROI is.  I haven't tried it but the screen shots look good and its getting very good reviews :happy2:

If your going to download these apps a good tip would be to plug your phone into iTunes and download it on your PC rather than via the wifi as its considerably quicker.

New update for iPhone TomTom coming shortly apparently.

At the moment, when you take a photo, its geotagged on a map as well, so you know exactly where it was taken etc.

TomTom will integrate this as well, rather then choosing to travel to a particular postcode or address etc, you can select a photo and it will take you to the point where the image was taken!
