CAN gateway
« on: October 17, 2010, 11:57:18 am »
Need to update mine.

Question: is it cheaper to go to a dealer than ebay (95 squids on there) and will I be able to buy it cheaper at a Skoda or Seat dealer, rather than a VW one?

Cheaper off ebay. A best offer of £75 to these guys usually works!

VW Main dealer I think you're looking at around £140 for the same part.

And where abouts are these little beauties hidden away in the car?

Don't ask! I spent about 4 hours retrieving mine last weekend. The easiest way I found was by removing the 2 dash panels which cover the part beneath the steering wheel. Depending on the model year of your car it'll either be perched on a bracket above the pedals OR behind the relay panel. Mine was in the former location and proves a bit of a bitch to get off! The dash panel removal requires a screwdriver with a Torx T20 size bit and a right angled socket with a T20 adaptor for undoing the hidden screw underneath the panel on your centre console.

A Haynes manual might help!

Righto, it's bought. Coding now: am I right in thinking that it's merely a matter of ticking the correct boxes for the kit on the car and then the unit writes its own long code(s) accordingly?

Not that I've got VCDS mind!

First you need to write down or print screen the one you have in, otherwise you're lost as to what boxes to tick

Over the top mod list ;o)

Is that all there is to it, though? I read somewhere about the gateway needing to be changed from LHD to RHD, too?

Yes in long coding the last byte is for country coding and manufacturer in drop down boxes, so you will need to choose vw and rhd otherwise you will get a fog light out warning on your dash.
