S3 engine in a mk5
« on: October 17, 2010, 03:41:49 pm »
Not sure if this correct place for this but, i'm seriously considering buyiong the s3 engine in the for sale section and popping it in the mk5, its minus the turbo manifold etc but been told is a straight fit?

Need a bit of advice on what to do, I've got DaveB porker brakes in the garage, uprated ARBs, WALK and just bought pendulum mounts, and will be getting uprated mounts as well, now I need to know what to do next?

What turbo, manifold etc, I assume the bits i've got will be able to be used on the S3 engine?

I would be looking for about 350 bhp if poss. What other parts do i need to get? Intercooler I assume but not sure what else?

Can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks

I think, although not always correctly, that its almost the same except for the conrods and pistons to lower the compression ratio for the KO4 producing more boost.

Different injectors?

And some have said changes to the head, although I know somebody who has had the same flow rates through both standard heads.

Some have said different block and head material?

If it was cheaper I would buy it and rebuild it from the bottom up with new upgraded crank, rods, pistons, flowed head, cams, valves, upgraded bearings etc etc.

I could go on but I won't!

Waiting for somebody to correct me!

They've already made what you're doing, it's called the Edition 30 :signLOL:

It should go in ok.  You'll want a K04 turbo which has the manifold built in for an OEM install else you're in the realms of after market ones.

IIRC there is a brand new turbo in the FS section too.

S3 Intercooler is a good one and well priced.

The ECU's will be the same I think save for the software, you'll need some jiggery pokery to match the Immo etc but it's not a big issue.

The new turbo in the FS section on is mine im afraid. Depending on what you want tho, i've got a used K04 that could do with a service before its ideally usable. Its done about 25k miles, but i would prefer it was serviced before going thru the hassle of it being used just to be safe.

So would i need to re-build the engine to get say 350-375bhp?  I thought I could just drop it in and bolt on a bigger/hybrid turbo, I've been talking to the seller and she has suggested storm in reading (handy as wife is from there so handy for lifts etc)

I was hoping to drop off engine and just get the bits and have it bolted together. Is it not as simple as I thought then? :ashamed:

I like the idea of a stronger engine so getting a nice basis to beef it up a bit.

I think you'd be able to see a good figure with the S3 engine in it's normal state without worrying about internals etc.

The internals etc might be a good idea if you had mega plans in the future and thus cheaper to do while the engine was already out.

So in short you could see some real gains by installing the engine as is and having a good map.  You already realised you'd need a good intercooler, you'd likely want to budget for a fuel pump as well.

Sorry you don't need to do that, but, its what I would do if I had a running car and an engine on a stand!

Sorry.

No worrys mate, think it might get a bit expensive if i did get engine upgraded, I'm not going to going for silly power, is 350bhp ok on a standard engine?

Been a while since i've played about with engines in cars, first 1 a had was a 2.2 capri with twin 40s back in the 80s, the last was my MK3 VR6 with a charger.
I'm thinking 350bhp should be plenty in a mk5 without going mad.

I really should of waited  and just got an Edition 30 in the first place. :signLOL:

Thanks for everyones help, any further info gratefully received

Does this need a blanking plate like the old 1.8t did for the quattro part?

I guess you'd fit the FWD gearbox.

The Rocco R is FWD with this engine, although it does have a revised gearbox.
