Wheel Arch Rust
« on: October 18, 2010, 08:26:17 pm »
Well almost ...

Noticed today there were some very small blisters in the paint just at the wheel arch lip.  Hasn't come though as rust yet but I guess its just a matter of time.  Noticed a few threads on rusting mk5's recently - anyone had any success with the dealers on this one?  Will be taking it in over the next week or so.

Its an 05 plate - no chips or any other damage in that area and no evidence its been damaged before my ownership.  A bit worrying this as its becoming a common theme ...

Well took it to the dealers bodyshop today and the warranty manager confirmed that this was becoming a common problem with mkv's and that he would put in a claim and based on previous experience would most likely get sweet FA.  Then he said he would put the claim in via the service department and try and get goodwill, he reckoned 50/50 was as good as it was likely to get - maybe 75/25 at the very most.

Apparantly VW know of this and believe its due to the wheel arch liner rubbing on the metal panel inside and out of sight, and thats where the rust starts.  VW class this as 'mechanical damage' therefore they don't cover it under the 12 year anti perforation warranty but under the normal 3 year warranty - even though as the guy said himself, its rust at the end of the day :fighting:

Sounds like they are trying it on.... escalate your claim if they don't offer you a decent solution, try VW customer service, then e-mail the head honcho...don't back down!

I won't be backing down, rust on a 5 year old car is completely unaceptable in this day and age where there is no damage.  To be fair to the dealer I think they were just giving it to me straight as this is what he's been getting back from VW HO on other claims.  I got the impression they will push my case as far as possible but failing the easy way - I'm more than happy to do things the hard way  :fighting:

my gti is a 05 plate too and i noticed that my front wing was doing the same on the drivers side, i went to vw and said fix it please and told them the passenger side had just started to rust too, they called me back 3 days later saying that they wont do it as a warranty job but they will do it as good will, i said thanks but complained as he told me that vw had admitted they made a sh*tty arch liner. well so he said but if they don't do it contact vw customer support and it will get fixed.

long story short i got two new front wings

Didn't turn out very well I'm afraid ... you can just about see the paint is bobbled in the area marked.

Thanks for the photo.
I noticed that on most cars the arch does not fit very well and along the edge somewere it always leaved about  1cmx4cm width gap were dirt can get in.
Also that the plastic has lumps on it in places to space it off the wing and suspension turret. Behind were it bolts to the inner wing area is a plastic lump were it also moves about alot due to lack of decent fixings.
Its simply not a good design and also is no better on the mk6 than it was on my mk5.

Is this issue with the front wheel arches or does it effect the rears as well?

Thanks for that Snoop, i'll keep an eye on mine, but all seems fine at the mo! Give it a couple of years and at this rate everyone will be taking their golfs back to VW for warranty claims!
