Ive got a brand new key that I am taking in on Wednesday morning to be coded. It is still in the VW wrapper so i do not know if it has a battery but would assume so. My question is can I actually code the thing myself or is that taking DIY too far?
There are two different codes that need matching to your car.
One is for the remote for alarm and central locking, which you can do yourself, this is the one that the battery is needed for.
The other code is the immobiliser one, which is what the transponder holds. This doesn't need a battery, but needs coding with special equipment that the dealer has. Depending on the age of the car, some other people have gear that can do this.
Brief answer, but it's late
