....Having had the experience of a boost leak (due to a crack in the manifold/wastegate casting) I couldn't agree more!
As I think you posted earlier, it's a stupid oversight of VW not to include a boost gauge on the Mk5 GTI. I wonder if the Mk6 will have one. IF they do I bet it won't have numeric values displayed but be just a pretty graphic like on the Golf GT(?).

^^^ Robin, when you had your boost leak wasn't your boost gauge still showing the turbo achieving 21(ish) psi?? Hence, why there was some original confusion as to what was wrong with your car? Your boost leak was so minute, that it couldn't really be picked up on the boost gauge? Please correct me if I'm wrong, my memory may be decieving me.
Also, surely if there is a problem with the car, the CEL light will go on/the driver will be able to feel something, be that through a misfire, hesitation loss of power etc etc.
Or are you saying that the point of the boost gauge is mainly as a clear and effective way to pinpoint the problem towards a boost leak?

....No, your memory is not deceiving you - The boost gauge hardly displayed the leak but it was more visible after the leak was cured and a very small increase displayed, also achieving it faster.
I think that it would be good if boost gauges had an arm which remained at a max point for say 30 seconds so that you could catch the max value more easily - It all moves so quickly. Like the way a sound level display works in pushing up a bar at its max.
Personally I think that a boost gauge is most valuable in helping to identify why you may be suddenly experiencing a loss of power but there may be a number of causes. It's less effective with a very minor leak like mine. At the very least it ticks off a list of various things to check in order to solve a problem - A process of patient elimination.

VW AG don't like admitting their cars have anything as untidy as engines, never mind turbochargers.
As an aside, I just recalled that the Blue Racer Defi gauge is in PSI - they don't do a metric variant do they as that version is for the US market IIRC. Still bloody good electronics in there though.
/doesn't work in old money
