Velcro is more easily nickable and i'm not sure how it would weather etc. I don't have any direct experience of it so perhaps someone else might say.

I've used Velcro and its fine for weathering. Used it for years and never had problems, that's with pressure washing at least once a week. And less is more with Velcro

and in terms of nicking number plates, the Velcro is very secure although, if someone wanted to steal my numberplates , I'd rather they take them and be gone. Rather they came off easily and didn't do any damage
