difference in components between ed30 and GTI
« on: October 24, 2010, 09:15:45 pm »
Hella all.

Im about to buy a mk5 gti

Im not sure if its worth spending the extra money for a ed30.  obviously I want one for the extra 30bhp.  the 300bhp chip and the larger ko4 turbo.  but there about £4000 more (and i can't find a white one)..  im not to bothered about the seats, badges and body kit although they would be nice.

What parts are different with the ED30?  is it just a bigger turbo or are there more components are different.

Im thinking about buying a standard GTI but only if i can build it to the same spec as a ED30

Thanks for any help

If your looking for tuning potential then yes the ED30 is worth the extra IMHO.

It's more than just a bigger turbo, it has stronger internals as well. However just about everything else inc brakes, suspension and the intercooler are the same as the base GTI.

There is also the bodywork stuff like the front splitter, different rear bumper and colour coding to add plus the half leather seats and red stitching  :happy2:

theres one hell of a surcharge for the Ed30 IMO.

however when you consider to take a GTI upto 280Hp you would require  an exhaust/intake/ intercooler/ discharge pipes/HPFP and stage 2 + remap (probably >£3000)

where as you could surpass that power in an Ed30 for only a £500 remap.  SO in terms of tuning, youare saving yourself £2500.  That doesnt mean anything though, becuase you will then go stage2 etc.  basically your p!ssing in the wind either way

yeah man i understand where your coming from.  Its 5k more for a white ED30 over a GTI though

is another possible route to fit a K04 turbo and stage one revo GTI remap to the GTI.   second hand turbo £450. map £500 = 300bhp...  possibly?

How much power can the standard GTi engine take reliably??

std GTI engine can handle a k04 turbo conversion but not much more else.

You can k04 convert the engine though.  it does require injectors, relocated DV and you should essentially be able to make stage 1 Ed30 power.  But to be fair if your going to do that then why not spend extra on the downpipe/intake and HPFP

yeah I would do all that lot after...  all in stages. Or before the k04 depending on if there compatible with both.. sorry to be a pain and ask questions.  i could probaly find all the answers but would take hours of searching.

will a ED30 k04 TBE fit the standard GTI? use the same indution kit for both?  Can i get 350-400 bhp from a k04 convertion without internal mods

the pipe that goes from your MAF sensor to your turbo differs. the k03 is just a straight through pipe. the k04 has a DV take off in it.

This image is a k04 with the DV take off

this is the k03 intake

expect 320-350Hp with all the supporting mods and a nice dyno.  Even the k04 ed30/GTI dont get over 360Hp and more often than not get around 320-350 there are guys who have bent rods with the GT2871 which was only getting 390Hp with water meht.

Nice one mate.  think im going to go with the standard GTI.  can't see what that extra 5k gets you with much with the ED30

Well the extra money gets you an Edition 30.... for me that was enough of a reason!

dont get me wrong id rather have an edition 30.  but for the same money it looks like i can have a GTI with a sat nav, bbs LMs, coilovers, 280bhp, and edtion 30 front lip and rear bumper.  can't see where id be missing out

theres always a cupra.  they depreicate much more than the ed30, they have the same k04 engine, bigger better brakes.  the only downside is the interior, although adding the multifunction stereo top the dash makes it look alot better.

i like my VWs.  only thing id have instead of this is a evo 8, bmw M3, or a scobby sti.  one of them will be the car after this GTI  :happy2:  when i can afford the insurance
